Railroad Workers Tools To Ease Your Day-To-Day Life
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for years that the company hasn’t taken the necessary steps to clean the underground plume that was contaminated with rail yard. The latest tests show that the contamination could still be affecting people who live near.

Researchers believe it could be due to the high number of cancers that are found in the area. Two years into a health study conducted by the state they discovered higher than expected levels of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia as well as adult kidney and renal pelvis cancers within the communities around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote is a common chemical that is used in the treatment of wood. It can cause cancer in people who are exposed to it.

It is a dense oily substance which is black or amber in color and has a smoky odor and a burnt taste. It is a distillation of coal product that has been used for more than 150 years as a wood preserver.

It is used in the United States to treat railroad ties, and other types woods like fence posts, utility poles, as well as pilings for marine use. It can also be used to guard log houses and other structures from insects and rot.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), creosote is a potentially dangerous chemical. A short-term exposure could cause irritation to the skin and eyes as well as chemical burns stomach pain burning of the mouth or throat and liver or kidney issues.

Exposure for long periods can cause skin and scrotum cancers. This is a serious issue for those who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes.

It is considered a probable human carcinogen, as per the EPA. It has been linked to various cancers which include esophageal, as well lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote due to a railroad yard close to their homes. They claim that the chemical has caused soil and homes to be contaminated and is spreading underground.

The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the campaign to sue Union Pacific in federal court. Railroad Workers demand that the company test regularly for contamination and take steps to prevent the spread of the disease.

A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed an action against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote had contaminated their soil and caused major health problems as a result of the former rail yard.

They are seeking damages from the railroad to cover the cost of cleanup as well as other related costs. Railroad Injury Settlement Amounts claim to be harmed by environmental racism and discrimination and other types of pollution that have affected their families and themselves.

Dioxin

Dioxins are substances that do not degrade quickly in the environment and can remain in the soil, air, or in sediment for a long time. They can come from various sources, including natural disasters, industrial accidents cigarette smoke and incineration of hazardous waste.

Although the effects of dioxin on health in low concentrations aren't known yet, there is evidence suggesting that they can cause serious diseases like cancer. Dioxin levels that are higher have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, organ cancers immune issues, and endocrine issues such as hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to hormonal issues, weakened immunity as well as diabetes, menstrual problems and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) the most popular way people are exposed to the toxins is through food and water. They are not volatile or water-soluble, which means they are more easily absorbable by the body via the intake of meat, dairy products such as fish, as well as other seafood.

It is nevertheless important to remember that the level of exposure that can have detrimental effects on your health will depend on several factors, such as the amount you eat or drink, the frequency you drink or eat and the amount of air you breathe. You should also take into consideration your gender and age, as well as your nutrition and family traits to determine if your family will be exposed to dioxins.

The kind of contaminant is crucial. According to the EPA certain toxins are more harmful than others to the health of humans. For instance, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a detrimental effect on your health than creosote.

For Cancer Lawsuits , PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys and liver. They also can harm the immune system of the person and interfere with the growth of healthy teeth and bones.

For years, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a series of cancer deaths that have been related to the Union Pacific rail yard, which is next to their neighborhoods. The city's health department announced on Friday that it had found cancer-causing chemical compounds in surface samples near the rail yard. The announcement said that the results were not a good sign. Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's going to take legal action against Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan presented to Texas environmental regulators wouldn't be sufficient in light of the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

PCBs, also referred to as polychlorinated biphenylsare harmful chemicals that have been in use for more than 60 years in both consumer and industrial products. After being found to cause cancer and to suppress the immune system PCBs were banned in 1979.

After being released into the atmosphere, PCBs contaminate air, soil, and water across the world. They are extremely binders to organic matter and tend to be persistent which means they are easily transported and accumulated in the environment.

This is why PCBs constitute a major risk for the protection of health and safety of people and the environment. The EPA considers them to be a possible human carcinogen and has shown that they can cause cancer in lab animals.

Furthermore certain studies have linked PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially true for children exposed to these chemicals during the womb.

The most common route for exposure to PCBs is through food. Fish is the most common source of exposure because they are the source of the most PCBs. However, PCBs can also be found in dairy and beef and other agricultural products.

Another way to be exposed to PCBs is through drinking and showering with water that is affected by PCBs. This could be caused by leaks or spills from electrical and other equipment.

Similar to this, people may be exposed to PCBs through breathing the air or through skin. These chemicals can cause a condition called chloracne, which is a mild, small skin lesions that can be present for a period of weeks or years.

The effects of PCBs upon human health are not fully understood. Researchers have suggested that they could cause liver and biliary cancers in humans. However it is necessary to conduct more research to understand how this impacts us.

EPA has also been examining whether these chemicals cause birth defects in newborns, including lower birth weight. A low birth weight has been linked to Type II diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in life. In two studies, children who were born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth, and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a highly toxic metal that is found in many items, such as paints, pipes, and food cans. It can be absorbed by the body via two main routes: oral and respiratory.

It is a potent chemical that can oxidize and react with other chemicals present in your environment. This can lead to it accumulating in the body and can lead to serious health problems such as cancer and other illnesses.

In Houston the residents who live near a creosote treatment plant owned by Union Pacific Railroad have a high risk of developing cancer. The city has asked the federal government to direct the railroad to remove its contaminated facility.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of having its rail yard contaminated in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with carcinogenic chemicals to humans, such as creosote. The company has tried to clean up the mess, but a plan presented to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not sufficient residents believe.

One of the most important problems that stemmed from the contamination was the groundwater plume beneath homes in the region. A recent study conducted by the department of health shows that the concentration of creosote in soil samples from the rail yard is more than the recommended level for drinking water.

Another issue is the slow release of creosote from the atmosphere. It causes residents to breathe toxic levels of vapors, which can cause fatalities for both children and adults.

It is possible that the vapors cause cancer among those who inhale them. To find out more about the effect of the vapors on lives of residents there is a door-to door survey being done in the neighborhood.

This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. It's a sad state of affairs and must be taken care of immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study found that the rate of leukemia was five times higher among children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhoods than was anticipated. The study also found that adult cancers were more prevalent in these neighborhoods than elsewhere in Texas.
