10 Things That Everyone Is Misinformed About The Word "Railroad Workers."
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn’t taken the necessary steps to clean up an underground plume contaminated rail yard. The latest tests have shown that the contamination could be an issue for residents living nearby.

Researchers believe it is due to the high incidence of cancers found in the region. Two years after launching an all-state health investigation the researchers discovered that there were higher than expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic and adult pelvis and kidney cancers in areas around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote which is a common chemical used for the treatment of wood is also a popular one. Cancer Lawsuit is also a toxic substance and can cause cancers when exposed to it.

It is a heavy oily substance which is black or amber in color and has a smoky smell and a burnt flavor. It is a coal-tar distillation product that has been used for more than 150 years as a wood preserver.

It is used in the United States to treat railroad tiesand other types of woods, like fence posts and utility poles, and pilings for marine structures. It can also be used to protect log structures and homes against rot and insect infestation.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that creosote could be a hazardous chemical. Exposure to creosote for brief periods may cause irritation to the eyes and skin, chemical burns stomach pains, burning in the throat or mouth and liver or kidney issues and even permanent damage.

Exposure for long periods can cause skin and scrotum carcinomas. Workers who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment and other manufacturing processes are at risk.

It is regarded as a possible human carcinogen, according to the EPA. It has been linked to a variety of different types of cancer, including esophageal and lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote, thanks to a former railroad yard close to their homes. They say the chemical has affected their homes and soil, and it continues to spread throughout the underground.

Harris County and Houston have joined the effort against Union Pacific in federal court. They would like the company to test regularly for contamination and to take steps to stop it from spreading.

A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed an action against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote has contaminated their soil and caused serious health issues as a result of the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation from the railroad to help cover the cost of cleanup and other related costs. They claim they have been harmed by racism in the environment discrimination, sexism, and other forms of pollution that affected their families and themselves.

Dioxin

Dioxins are chemicals that do not degrade quickly in the environment, and they can be found in the air, water, or sediment for a long time. They can come from many sources, such as natural catastrophes, industrial accidents smoke from cigarettes and incineration of hazardous waste.

The effects of dioxin on health aren't clear at low levels, however there is evidence that dioxin can cause cancer and other serious diseases. Dioxin levels that are higher are linked to a higher risk of heart disease, organ cancers as well as immune-related issues and endocrine problems, including hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to hormonal issues, suppressed immunity and diabetes, menstrual issues and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most common way people are exposed is through water and food. They are not liquid or volatile, which means they are more likely to be taken into the body via the consumption of dairy products or fish and other seafood.

It is crucial to keep in mind that exposure to dioxins could affect your health depending on many aspects, such as the amount you drink, eat, and the frequency with which you breathe. You should also take into consideration your gender and age, nutritional status, and family characteristics to determine if your family will be exposed to dioxins.

Furthermore, the kind of contaminant is also an important factor. According to the EPA the EPA, certain toxins are more dangerous than others for the health of humans. Polychlorinated biphenyls, also known as PCBs are more likely than creosote negatively impact your health.

For instance, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys, and liver. They can also harm the immune system of a person, and affect the development of healthy teeth and bones.

For a long time, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a cluster of cancer deaths that have been connected to the Union Pacific rail yard, which is next to their homes. Friday's announcement by the city's health department stated that it discovered cancer-causing chemicals in samples of the surface near the rail yard. The release said the findings were not encouraging. Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he plans to sue Union Pacific over the matter, and said a plan that he has submitted to Texas environmental regulators will not be sufficient in light of the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been used in industrial and household products for over 60 years. PCBs were banned in 1979 after they were found to cause cancer, inhibit the immune system, and impair learning.

Cancer Lawsuit can cause contamination of soil or water as well as air in many regions of the world once they are released into the environment. They are extremely binders to organic matter and are often persistent and therefore, are easy to transport and build up in the environment.

PCBs are a major concern for protecting the environment as well as public health. They are classified as a probable human carcinogen by EPA and have been found to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Union Pacific Lawsuit Settlements show a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially true for children exposed to these chemicals while pregnant.

PCBs are most often ingested through food items. Since they are the most abundant in PCBs Fish is the primary source of exposure. But, PCBs can also be present in beef and dairy and other agricultural products.

Showering or drinking PCB-contaminated water is another way to be exposed. This could be due to leaks or spills which could be caused by electrical or other equipment.

Similarly, people can also be exposed to PCBs by breathing in air or by touching the skin. These chemicals can trigger an illness known as Chloracne. This is a mild pale, yellow-colored lesions that last for weeks to years.

The effects of PCBs upon the health of humans aren't fully understood. Some researchers have suggested they could cause liver or the biliary tract cancers among humans, but further studies are needed to discover the extent to which this impacts us.

EPA has also been investigating whether these chemicals can cause birth defects for newborns, including less weight at birth. Low birth weight has been associated with insulin resistance, or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in life. Two studies revealed that children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower birth weights , and/or later in life.

Lead

Lead is a toxic metal and is found in a variety of products, including pipes, paints and food containers. It is absorbed into the body through two main pathways: the respiratory and oral.

It is a strong oxidizing chemical and can react with other chemicals present in your environment. This can lead to it accumulating in the body and can lead to serious health problems such as cancer and other diseases.

In Houston, people who live near a legacy creosote treatment facility owned by Union Pacific Railroad have a high risk of developing cancer. The city has asked for the federal government's help in the cleanup of the railroad's toxic site.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of contaminating its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic to humans, including creosote. The railroad has been trying to remove the contamination, but a plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not enough, residents say.

One of the biggest problems that arose from the contamination was the groundwater plume under the homes in the area. A recent study conducted by the health department has shown that the concentration of creosote in soil samples in the rail yard is higher than the levels recommended for drinking water.

Another issue is that creosote is slowly disappearing into the air. As it is, it causes residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors that can be harmful for children as well as adults.

It is possible that the vapors cause cancer in those who inhale them. To learn more about the effects of the vapors' effects on the lives of residents the neighborhood, a door-to-door survey being done in the neighborhood.

This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. It's a pity and must be taken care of immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study found that leukemia incidences were five times higher for children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens areas than was expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more prevalent in the neighborhood than elsewhere in Texas.
