What is Sin? - Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience. - Sin is an offense against God; saying NO to God, to oove, to presonal growth, and to others. - Sin is intentionally committed and a decision. - Sin is any thought or action against God, others, or oneself. - Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed or omission contrary to the eternal law of God. - Sin is a transgression of God’s law and will and rejection of His love. It is “missing the mark” (failure to keep the covenant). Sin is truly interpersonal: The personal malice of the sinner offending the persons of God and neighbor By committing a sin, the sinner alienate themselves from their neighbors, all creation, God adn their own true selves. Sin can be reduced to two factors: - Pride - refusing to be subject to God and not desiring to receive one's perfection from Him. - Sensuality - not trying to penetrate one's body by the Spirit. Social Aspect of Sin: A person's sin affects his/her fellow human beings more or less directly by causing harm to them, which is a deprivation of graces or friendship with God. We are responsible for sins committed by others: 1. When we cooperate in them by participating directly and voluntarily with them. 2. Ordering and agreeing to their sins. Sins give rise to social situations and institutions that are contrary to the divine goodness. "Structures of sin" are the expression and effect of personal sins. Personal sins constitute a social sin. The Proliferation of Sin Sin creates other sins; each one getting heavier and heavier. Gradiations of Sin - All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal. Mortal sin is a deliberate reversal of our option to be for God and for others. It exists when a reason knowingly and willingly, for whatever reason, chooses something gravely disordered. One commits a mortal sin when: There is knowledge or awareness
