The N-word is used too many times in the novel to not be reported as racist, which is why a professor of English at an Alabama university is bringing out a new, expurgated version of Mark Twain's classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn — without that racially offensive word. He's replaced the 219 times it appears with the word "slave".
We heard that trying to erase the N-word from American culture was "profoundly, profoundly wrong". We have been told that the book was "about a boy growing up a racist in a racist society who learns to reject that racism, and it makes no sense if the book isn't racist" says Sullivan.
