Railroad Workers Tips From The Top In The Industry
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to remove creosote-laden creosote plume that was at its rail yard that is contaminated. And now, the latest tests show the contamination could still be affecting people who live nearby.

Researchers suggest it could be due to higher cancer rates in the region. Two years into a state-wide health investigation they discovered higher than expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic Leukemia and adult renal and kidney pelvis cancers within the communities around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote, a common chemical used to treat wood is also a typical one. Railroad Workers is also a dangerous substance and can cause cancers when exposed to it.

It is a thick oily substance, from amber to black in color. It has a smoky scent and a bitter taste. It is a coal tar distillation product that has been used for over 150 years as a wood preservative.

In the United States, it is used to treat railroad ties as well as other kinds of wood including fence posts, utility poles and marine pilings. It can also be used to shield log homes and other structures from insects and rot infestation.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) creosote can be a potentially dangerous chemical. Exposure to creosote for brief periods may cause skin and eye irritation chemical burns, stomach pains, burning in the throat or mouth and liver or kidney issues and even permanent damage.

Long-term exposure could lead to skin and scrotum carcinomas. Workers who come into direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes are at risk.

It is regarded as a possible human carcinogen as per the EPA. It has been linked to a variety of cancers, including esophageal as well as lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote, because of a former railroad yard right next to their homes. They claim that the chemical has contaminated their homes, soil and is spreading underground.

Harris County and Houston have joined forces to fight Union Pacific in federal court. They want the company to test regularly for contamination and take steps to prevent it from spreading.

Cancer Lawsuit of Fifth Ward neighbors filed an action against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote was a source of contamination in their soil and caused serious health issues from the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation for their illnesses and suffering as well as damages from railroads for the cost of cleaning and other costs. They also claim to be suffering from environmental racism and discrimination and other forms of pollution that have adversely affected their families and friends.

Dioxin

Dioxins are a class of chemicals that don't break down in the environment quickly , and can remain in the air, in the soil, or sediment for long periods. They can be found in diverse sources, including natural catastrophes, industrial accidents smoking cigarettes, and the incineration process of hazardous waste.

The health effects of dioxin are not clear at low levels, however there is evidence to suggest that they can cause cancer and other serious illnesses. Higher levels of dioxin have been linked to increased risk of heart disease, organ cancers as well as immune-related issues and endocrine problems, including hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to reproductive problems, a suppressed immune system, diabetes and menstrual issues as well as weight loss, hair growth and facial cysts called chloracne.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most prevalent way people are exposed is through food and water. They aren't volatile nor water-soluble, so they are easily taken in by the body through the consumption of meat, dairy products fish, and other seafood.

It is vital to remember, however, that exposure to chemicals can affect your health, depending on many factors like how much you drink, eat, and how often you breathe. You should also consider your gender and age, your diet, and family traits to determine if you will be exposed to dioxins.

The kind of contaminant used is equally important. The EPA states that certain toxic substances are more likely to have a damaging effect on the human body than others. Polychlorinated Biphenyls, or PCBs, are more likely than creosote cause harm to your health.

For instance, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys, and liver. They can also affect the immune system and cause problems with the growth of healthy teeth, bones, and bones.

For years, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a string of cancer-related deaths which has been tied to the Union Pacific rail yard, close to their homes. The city's health department announced on Friday that it has found cancer-causing chemical compounds in surface samples near the rail yard. The release said that the results were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's going to take legal action against Union Pacific over the matter and also said that a plan presented to Texas environmental regulators will not be adequate given the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

PCBs, also referred to as polychlorinated biphenyls, are harmful chemicals that have been used for over 60 years in both consumer and industrial products. They were banned in 1979 after being found to cause cancer, inhibit the immune system, and hinder learning.

PCBs can contaminate soil, water, and air in many regions of the globe once they are released into the environment. They are strong binders of organic matter that can be easily transported and accumulated in the environment.

Therefore, PCBs constitute a major risk for the protection of health and safety of people and the environment. The EPA considers them a potential human carcinogen and has shown that they can cause cancer in lab animals.

Additionally certain studies have found a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly relevant for children who have been exposed to these chemicals while in the womb.

The primary route of exposure to PCBs is through food items. Fish is the main source of exposure because they contain the most PCBs. However, Union Pacific Lawsuit Settlements can also found in beef, dairy products, and other agricultural products.

Showering and drinking water is another way to be exposed. This can be caused by leaks or spills that occur in electrical and other equipment.

People can also be exposed to PCBs by breathing in the air or skin contact. These chemicals can trigger the condition known as chloracne which is a mild, small skin lesions that can last from weeks to years.

However, the effects of PCBs on human health are not yet completely known. Researchers have suggested that they may cause liver and biliary cancers in humans. However it is necessary to conduct more research to understand how this impacts us.

The EPA is also examining whether these chemicals might cause birth defects in newborn babies. The low birth weight of newborns has been linked to insulin resistance, or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in life. Two studies revealed that children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower birth weights , and/or an earlier age.

Lead

Lead is a toxic metal and is found in a wide range of products, including pipes, paints and food containers. It can be absorbed by the body via two main pathways: the respiratory and oral.

Railroad Workers is a potent chemical that oxidizes and reacts with other chemicals in your environment. This can lead to it accumulating within the body. This can lead to serious health problems like cancer, among other diseases.

In Houston, people who live close to a creosote-based treatment plant run by the Union Pacific Railroad have a high risk of developing cancer. The city has asked for the federal government's assistance in cleaning up the railroad's contamination site.

Union Pacific Railroad has a past history of been a source of contamination for its Fifth Ward rail yard and Kashmere Garden neighborhood with chemicals that can cause cancer. Residents claim that the company has been working to remove the contamination but the plan presented to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.

The groundwater plume that runs beneath the homes in the affected area is among the most dangerous effects of the contamination. A recent study by health officials has revealed that soil samples from the rail yard have more creosote than that recommended for drinking water.

Another major concern is that the creosote is slowly dispersing into the air. As it is, it causes residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors that can be harmful to children as well as adults.

Cancer Lawsuits is possible that the vapors cause cancer among those who inhale them. To learn more about the effects of the vapors' effects on the lives of residents, a door-to-door survey is being done in the neighborhood.

This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a very sad situation that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

A recent study conducted by the Department of State Health Services discovered that children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighborhoods contracted a form of leukemia at a five times greater rate than what was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more prevalent in these areas than in other areas of Texas.
