Railroad Workers 101: It's The Complete Guide For Beginners
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for years that the company hasn’t taken the necessary steps to clean the plume of underground pollution that has contaminated the rail yard. Recent tests have revealed that the contamination could be in the vicinity of residents.

Researchers believe that it could be due to the high number of cancers in the area. Two years into a state-wide health investigation the researchers found higher than anticipated rates of childhood lymphoblastic Leukemia and adult renal and kidney pelvis cancers in neighborhoods surrounding the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote is a popular chemical used for the treatment of wood is also a very common one. It is also a poisonous substance that can cause cancer in those exposed to it.

It is a dense oily substance, amber to black in color. It has a smokey smell and a burnt taste. It is a coal-tar distillation product that has been used for more than 150 years to preserve wood.

It is used in the United States to treat railroad ties, and other types woods, including fence posts, utility poles, as well as pilings from marine construction. It is also employed to protect log homes and other structures from insects and rot infestation.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Creosote, according to the EPA, is potentially dangerous chemical. The exposure to creosote over short periods of time can cause irritation to the eyes and skin and chemical burns, stomach pains, burning of the throat or mouth, kidney or liver problems, and even permanent damage.

Long-term exposure can lead to skin and scrotum carcinomas. This is a major concern for workers who are in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes.

It is considered a probable human carcinogen as per the EPA. It has been linked to a range of cancers of various types such as esophageal or lung cancer.

Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote for years, thanks to an old rail yard located near their homes. They say the chemical has affected their homes and soil, and it continues to spread throughout the underground.

The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the campaign to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They want the company to test frequently for contamination and take measures to stop it from spreading.

In October of 2017 a group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific. They claim that creosote emitted from the former rail yard is contaminating the soil beneath their homes , causing serious health issues.

They are seeking damages from the railroad to pay the cost of cleanup and other related costs. They also claim to be victimized by environmental racism and discrimination, and other forms of pollution that have affected them and their families.

Dioxin

Dioxins are a class of chemicals which do not break down quickly in the environment and can remain in the air, water, soil or in sediment for a long period of time. Cancer Lawsuits can be derived from many sources, such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, smoking cigarettes, and incineration of hazardous waste.

Although the effects of dioxin on health in low concentrations aren't identified, there is evidence that they can cause serious illnesses , such as cancer. Higher levels of dioxin are linked to a higher risk of heart disease, organ cancers immune issues, and endocrine issues, like hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to problems with hormones, immune suppression as well as diabetes, menstrual problems and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most common way people are exposed to the toxins is through food and water. They are not volatile or water-soluble, so they are more likely to be in the body through the consumption of dairy products or fish and other seafood.

It is important to remember that exposure to chemicals can be detrimental to your health, depending on many factors such as how much you drink, eat, and how often you breathe. It is also important to consider your gender, age, diet, nutritional status and family characteristics and other health factors that could affect whether you are affected by dioxins or not.

Additionally, the type of contaminant is another important aspect. The EPA states that certain toxins are more likely to have a negative impact on health than others. Polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs, are more likely than creosote negatively impact your health.

PCBs can cause damage to eyes, liver, kidneys, and kidneys. They can also damage the immune system of a person, and interfere with the growth of healthy teeth and bones.

Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for years about a cluster of cancer deaths that are linked to the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is located next to their homes. The announcement made by the city's health department said that it had identified cancer-causing chemicals in samples of the rail yard. The release noted that the findings were not encouraging. FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he intends to sue Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan proposed by Texas environmental regulators won't suffice.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been used in consumer and industrial products for more than 60 years. After they were proven to cause cancer and to suppress the immune system These chemicals were banned in 1979.

PCBs can contaminate soil as well as water and air in many areas of the world after they are released into the environment. They are powerful binders of organic matter that can be transported easily and accumulated in the environment.

As a result, PCBs are a major concern for the protection of health and safety of people and the environment. They are deemed to be a probable human carcinogen by EPA and have been shown to cause cancer in lab animals.

In addition certain studies have found a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially the case for children exposed these chemicals during the womb.

The primary route of exposure to PCBs is through food items. Fish is the primary source of exposure, as they are the source of the most PCBs. However, PCBs can also found in beef, dairy products and other agricultural products.

Another way to be exposed to PCBs is through drinking and showering with water that has been infected with PCBs. This can be caused by leaks or spills which could occur in electrical and other equipment.

People may also be exposed to PCBs through breathing in air or through skin contact. These chemicals can cause a condition called Chloracne. This is a tiny, pale, yellow-colored skin lesions that last for weeks or even years.

However the effects of PCBs on human health aren't fully comprehended. Some researchers have suggested they could cause liver and biliary tract cancer in humans, but more studies are needed to understand how this impacts us.

The EPA is also investigating whether these chemicals could cause birth defects in newborn babies. A low birth weight has been associated with Type II diabetes, insulin resistance as well as high blood pressure and later-life cardiovascular disease. In two studies, children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth, and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a poisonous metal that is found in many products, including pipes, paints, and food cans. It is absorbed into the body through two major pathways: oral and respiratory.

Union Pacific Lawsuit Settlements is a potent chemical that can oxidize and react with other chemicals present in your environment. This can lead to its accumulation in the body and can lead to serious health problems like cancer, among other illnesses.

In Houston the residents who live near a creosote legacy treatment facility run by Union Pacific Railroad have a high rate of cancer. The city has asked for the federal government's assistance in cleaning up the railroad's toxic site.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of polluting its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic for humans, such as creosote. Residents have claimed that the company has been trying to remove the contamination but the proposal submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.

One of the biggest problems that stemmed from the contamination is the plume of groundwater that is located beneath homes in the region. A recent study conducted by health officials has shown that soil samples taken from the rail yard have higher levels of creosote than that recommended for drinking water.

Another issue is the gradual release of creosote in the air. It causes residents to breathe toxic levels of vapors, which can be fatal for children and adults.

It is also possible that the vapors are causing cancers in the residents who are breathing the vapors. To find out more about the effects of the vapors on lives of residents there is a door-to door survey being done in the neighborhood.

This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. Union Pacific Lawsuit Settlements is a terribly sad situation that needs to be addressed immediately.

A recent study conducted by the Department of State Health Services found that children in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities contracted a form leukemia at five times higher rate than expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more frequent in the neighborhood than elsewhere in Texas.
