Does it Really Need All That?

Media

I've already mentioned how pictures can take up lots of space. However, when they serve a purpose and don't eat too much data they are acceptable. However, what isn't often excused in text based web pages are videos. I hate it when I click on an interesting headline on a news site and am then redirected to a breif article acompained with a two-minute clip of their morning show. I'm probably not going to view the clip, so why should it take up my bandwidth? There is a case to be made for this type of scenario, but there is no argument that pages have some sort o video playing for no reason.

I'm sure that we have visited websites that had a spinning globe or some other high-definition image at the top. We may have glanced at it for a second and thought, "Hey, that looks cool." But then we looked down to find what we were looking for. We didn't visit to look at the background, but rather to consume the content on the website. The background of a website take up exponentially more data than what we went to the site to see. If the web page wasn't well-designed it could be that your browser is constantly downloading the same six-second video. Ceglowski suggested that images of President William Howard Taft should be used on websites.

Tablet Accessibility

I'm not a believer in tablets, I don't use them in the same way that other people So I'm not planning to spend long talking about them, but tablets are great for certain people. When iPads hit the market web pages started to evolve initially simple and unimportant buttons were expanded and styled and, of course, the most elegant ones are the ones you are least likely to press. pirate portal I'm grateful that I'm not a web developer because creating websites that function well on all kinds of hardware is not fun.

Ads

Up until this point I've only discussed things that are within the control of the developer, but once a page lets ads on it, then there is no way for developers to determine if the page they've spent hours creating and optimizing looks nice and perform effectively. A page of 3MB could be loaded with a 50 MB advertisement.

Ceglowski has presented this graph, based on the 2015 US average cost per bybyte of internet bandwidth. It shows the amount it costs to pull up advertisements on various websites as compared to the actual content. We can see that ads not only cost us our time and protection from computer viruses, but the simple act of displaying ads costs us money in the form of internet bandwidth. Another reason to install an ad blocking software is YouTube.

I could go on and on about ads, but I'm sure you're all. So I won't bore your eyes with it.

Two paths

Ceglowski showed two images of video games towards the end of his presentation.

Minecraft is a fairly basic game, and it's not an extremely beautiful game, but it's an excellent platform for creativity.

Call of Duty is constantly being developed to provide most impressive graphics and thrilling gameplay. However, they require more resources to run, and don't really distinguish themselves from other games in the genre.

We want the internet to look more like Minecraft. We want to see more original and original ideas being made using less than what we're used to with more.

What should I do?

I realize that I nor anyone likely to read this article will have an impact on the future of the internet. We will likely all be forced to use bloated sites, but we should be looking to remove bloat from other parts of our lives. Is a built in backup camera really worth paying an extra $500 for a new car? No, you're safer atually turning around to back up anyways. Is it really worth an extra $1.25 to get a scoop of guacamole on your burrito? You could get a whole avacado for less than the price. Do you think TV is worth your time? It's not, but you could be doing more productive things with your time.
