5 Railroad Workers Lessons From The Professionals
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to remove creosote in the underground air at its rail yard that is contaminated. Now, the most recent tests suggest that the contamination could still be affecting people who live near.

Researchers believe it is due to the large number of cancers found in the region. Two years into a state health investigation and they found higher than expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia and adult kidney and renal pelvis cancers within the communities around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote, a common chemical, is used in the treatment of wood. It can cause cancer in people who are exposed to it.

It is a dense oily substance which is black or amber in color and has a smoky smell and burnt taste. It is a distillation of coal product that has been used for more than 150 years as a wood preserver.

In the United States, it is used to treat railroad ties and other types of wood, including fence posts, utility poles, and marine pilings. It is also used to guard log houses and other structures from the effects of rot and insect invasion.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that creosote can be a hazardous chemical. A short-term exposure could cause eye and skin irritation and chemical burns stomach discomfort burning of the mouth or throat, and kidney or liver problems.

Long-term exposure may cause skin and scrotum cancer. This is a significant concern for those who come into direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes.

According to the EPA it is a possible human cancer-causing agent. It has been linked with a variety of cancers, including esophageal as well lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for a long time to creosote because of a former railroad yard that was close to their homes. They claim the chemical has affected their homes as well as their soil, and it continues to spread throughout the underground.

Harris County and Houston have joined forces in the fight against Union Pacific in federal court. They are requesting that the company tests frequently for contamination and take measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote was a source of contamination in their soil and caused major health problems as a result of the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation for their ailments and suffering and damages from the railroad to cover the cost of cleanup and other costs. They also claim that they are suffering from environmental racism and discrimination, and other kinds of pollution that have impacted them and their families.

Dioxin

Dioxins are a class of chemicals that don't break down in environment quickly and can remain in the air, soil or sediment for a lengthy period. They are found in many places in natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarette smoke, and incineration or hazardous waste.

Although the effects of dioxin on health at low levels are not well-studied but there is evidence that they can trigger serious illnesses like cancer. Higher levels of dioxin have been linked with an increased risk of organ cancers, heart disease immune issues, and endocrine disorders, like hormonal imbalances. They can also trigger hormonal problems, suppressed immunity as well as diabetes, menstrual problems and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most frequent way that people are exposed is through water and food. They are not volatile and water-soluble, which means they are more easily taken in by the body through the consumption of dairy products, meat fish, and other seafood.

Railroad Workers Cancer Lawsuit is crucial to keep in mind, however, that exposure to dioxins could be detrimental to your health based on a variety of factors , including how much you drink, eat, and how often you breathe. It is also important to consider your gender and age, as well as your nutrition and family characteristics to determine if you'll be exposed to dioxins.

The kind of contaminant used is crucial. According to the EPA, some toxins are more harmful than others to human health. For instance, polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a negative impact on your health than creosote.

For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys and liver. They can also damage the immune system and cause issues in the development of healthy teeth, bones and bones.

Railroad Cancer and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for years of cluster of cancers that have been caused by the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is right close to their homes. The city's health department announced Friday that it had found cancer-causing chemicals in surface samples around the rail yard. The release said the findings were not encouraging. Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's going to sue Union Pacific over the matter, and said a plan submitted to Texas environmental regulators isn't adequate given the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been used in industrial and consumer products for over 60 years. After being shown to cause cancer and weaken the immune system the immune system, these chemicals were banned in 1979.

PCBs can be harmful to soil as well as water and air in many regions of the globe once they are released into the environment. They are extremely binders to organic matter and tend to be persistent and therefore, are easy to transport and build up in the environment.

PCBs are a major concern for protecting the environment as well as public health. The EPA considers them a probable human carcinogen and has shown that they can cause cancer in lab animals.

Some studies also show a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly true for children who have been exposed to these chemicals while in the womb.

PCBs are mainly consumed through food items. Because they are the highest in PCBs Fish is the primary source of exposure. However, PCBs can also found in beef, dairy products, and other agricultural products.

Showering and drinking water is another method of exposure. This can be caused by leaks or spills that can occur in electrical and other equipment.

In the same way, people can be exposed to PCBs through breathing the air or by touching the skin. These chemicals can cause an illness known as Chloracne. This is a tiny pale, yellow-colored skin lesions that can last from weeks to years.

However the effects of PCBs on the human body are not completely understood. Researchers have suggested that they may cause biliary and liver cancers in humans. However it is necessary to conduct more research to better understand how this affects us.

EPA has also been examining whether these chemicals may cause birth defects in newborns, like less weight at birth. A low birth weight has been associated with Type II diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and later-life cardiovascular disease. In two studies, children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a toxic metal that can be found in many products, such as paints, pipes, and food cans. It is absorbed into the body through two main pathways: the respiratory and oral.

It is a powerful chemical that is oxidizing and can react with other chemicals present in your environment. This can lead to it accumulating in the body , and could lead to serious health problems like cancer, among other ailments.

In Houston residents living near a creosote treatment plant owned by Union Pacific Railroad have a high incidence of cancer. The city has asked for the federal government's assistance in cleaning up the railroad's contamination site.

Union Pacific Railroad has a past history of affected its Fifth Ward rail yard and Kashmere Garden neighborhood with chemicals that could cause cancer. Residents claim that the railroad has been trying to get rid of the pollution, but the proposal submitted to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.

The groundwater plume that runs beneath the homes in the affected area is one of the most severe effects of the contamination. A recent study by the health department has shown that the concentration of creosote present in soil samples near the rail yard is much higher than the recommended levels for drinking water.

Railroad Cancer is that the creosote is slowly escaping into the air. It causes residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors that are harmful to children as well as adults.

It is possible that the vapors could cause cancer among those who inhale them. To find out more about the effects of the vapors on the lives of residents there is a door-to door survey being done in the neighborhood.

This is a serious issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a very sad situation that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

A recent study by the Department of State Health Services discovered that children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities contracted a type leukemia at five times more frequently than was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more prevalent in these areas than elsewhere in Texas.
