Railroad Workers: The History Of Railroad Workers In 10 Milestones
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to clean up creosote-laden creosote plume that was at its rail yard that is contaminated. The most recent tests have shown that contamination could still be an issue for residents living nearby.

Researchers believe it could be linked to the increased cancer rates in the area. Two years after the launch of a state-wide health investigation and a study by researchers, they found that there were higher than expected rates of lymphoblastic cancer in children as well as adult kidney and pelvis cancers in the area surrounding the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote, a common chemical used for the treatment of wood, is also a common one. It is also a dangerous substance and can cause cancers in those exposed to it.

It is a heavy oily substance which is black or amber in color and has a smoky odor and burnt taste. It is a coal tar distillation product that has been used for over 150 years as an ingredient in wood preservative.

In the United States, it is used to treat railroad ties and other types of wood, including fence posts, utility poles, and marine pilings. It is also used to guard log houses and other structures from the effects of rot and insect invasion.

According to Union Pacific Lawsuit Settlements United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Creosote is potentially dangerous chemical. Exposure to it for short periods can cause skin and eye irritation and chemical burns stomach discomfort burning of the throat or mouth, and kidney or liver problems.

Exposure for long periods can lead to skin and scrotum cancer. This is a major concern for workers who are in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes.

According to the EPA the EPA, it is a known human cancer-causing agent. It has been linked to a range of different cancer types including esophageal and lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote, due to a former railroad yard near their homes. They claim that the chemical has caused soil and homes to be contaminated and is spreading underground.

Railroad Workers and Houston have joined forces in the fight against Union Pacific in federal court. They demand that the company test regularly for contamination , and take steps to prevent it from spreading.

In October of 2017, a group comprised of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific. They claim that creosote contaminated their soil and caused significant health issues as a result of the former rail yard.

They are seeking damages from the railroad to pay the costs of cleaning up and other related costs. They claim they have been affected by environmental racism and discrimination as well as other forms of pollution that affected them and their families.

Dioxin

Dioxins are chemical compounds which do not break down quickly in the environment and can remain in the air, water, or in sediment for a long period of time. They are found in a variety of locations, including natural disasters and industrial accidents, cigarette smoke, and incineration or hazardous waste.

The effects of dioxin on health aren't clear at low levels, however there is evidence to suggest that they may cause cancer as well as other serious diseases. Patients who are exposed at higher levels are believed to be at a higher risk of organ cancers, heart disease, immune system disorders and endocrine issues, such as hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to hormonal issues, weakened immunity and diabetes, menstrual issues and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the most common way people are exposed to dioxin is through drinking water or food. They are not liquid or volatile, which means they are more likely to be absorbed into the body through the consumption of meat, dairy products or fish and other seafood.

However, it is important to be aware that the amount of exposure that has negative effects on your health is dependent on various factors, including the amount you eat or drink, the frequency you drink or eat and the amount of air you breathe. It is also essential to consider your gender, age and nutrition status, as well as diet and family traits in addition to other health factors that can affect your risk of being affected by dioxins or not.

The type of contaminant is crucial. The EPA states that certain toxic substances are more likely to have a negative effect on human health than others. Railroad Injury Settlement Amounts or PCBs, are more likely than creosote have a negative effect on your health.

For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys, and liver. They also can harm the immune system and cause issues with the growth of healthy teeth, bones, and bones.

For years, residents in Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a series of cancer deaths that have been linked to the Union Pacific rail yard, that is right next to their communities. The announcement made by the city's health department revealed that they had found cancer-causing chemicals in surfaces near the rail yard. The release stated that the results were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's going to sue Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan that he has submitted to Texas environmental regulators won't be adequate in light of the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are harmful chemicals that have been used in industrial and consumer products for over 60 years. After being proven to cause cancer and suppress the immune system the immune system, these chemicals were banned in 1979.

PCBs can contaminate soil as well as water and air in many regions of the world once they are released into the environment. They bind tightly to organic matter, and are generally persistent that means they are simple to transport and accumulate in the environment.

PCBs are a significant concern for the protection of the environment and public health. They are regarded as a possible human carcinogen by EPA and have been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Certain studies also link PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially applicable to children who are exposed these chemicals while pregnant.

The most common route for exposure to PCBs is through food. Fish is the most common source of exposure because they are the source of the most PCBs. However, PCBs can also found in dairy products, beef and other agricultural products.

Drinking and showering with PCB-contaminated water is another method of exposure. This can be caused by leaks or spills that occur in electrical equipment and other.

People may also be exposed to PCBs through breathing in air or skin contact. These chemicals can cause the condition known as chloracne which is a small, pale, yellow skin lesions that can last from weeks to years.

However the effects of PCBs on human health aren't completely known. Researchers have suggested that they may cause biliary and liver cancers in humans. However there is more research needed to better understand how this impacts us.

EPA is also studying whether these chemicals may cause birth defects in newborns, such as less weight at birth. The low birth weight of newborns has been linked to Type II diabetes, insulin resistance and high blood pressure and later-life cardiovascular disease. In two studies, children who were born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth, and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a poisonous metal and is found in a wide range of products, including paints, pipes, and food cans. The body can absorb it through two main routes: oral and respiratory.

Union Pacific Lawsuit Settlements is a powerful chemical that can oxidize and react with other chemicals present in your environment. It is able to accumulate in the body, which could lead to serious health problems like cancer and other ailments.

In Houston residents living close to a creosote-based treatment facility owned by the Union Pacific Railroad have a high risk of developing cancer. The city has asked the federal government for an order to the railroad to remove its contaminated site.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of contamination of its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic for humans, such as creosote. Residents claim that the company has been working to clean up contamination but the plan presented to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not sufficient.

The plume of groundwater below homes in the affected area is one of the most dangerous effects of the contamination. A recent study conducted by the health department has shown that the concentration of creosote found in soil samples in the rail yard is much higher than the recommended level for drinking water.

Another cause for concern is the slow release of creosote from the atmosphere. It is causing residents to breathe toxic levels of vapors which can be fatal for both children and adults.

It is possible that the vapors cause cancer for those who breathe them. To find out more about the effects of the vapors in the lives of residents there is a door-to door survey being done in the neighborhood.

Railroad Workers is a serious issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a tragic situation and should be taken care of immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study discovered that leukemia rates were five times higher among children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhoods than was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more common in these areas than in other areas of Texas.
