20 Railroad Workers Websites That Are Taking The Internet By Storm
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn’t taken the necessary steps to clean the underground plume that was contaminated with rail yard. Cancer Lawsuits have demonstrated that contamination could still be in the vicinity of residents.

Researchers believe that it could be due to the high incidence of cancers in the region. Two years into a state health investigation, they found higher-than-expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic Leukemia as well as adult kidney and pelvis cancers in areas around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote, a chemical commonly used in the treatment of wood, is also a common one. It can cause cancer in people exposed to it.

It is a dense, oily substance that is black or amber-colored and has a smoky smell and a burnt flavor. It is a coal tar distillation product that has been in use for more than 150 years as a wood preservative.

It is widely used in the United States to treat railroad tiesand other types of woods like fence posts, utility poles, and marine pilings. It can also be used for protecting log homes and other structures against decay and insect infestation.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declares that creosote can be a dangerous chemical. Exposure to creosote for short periods of time can cause skin and eye irritation as well as chemical burns stomach pains, burning of throat or mouth and liver or kidney problems and even permanent damage.

Long-term exposure may cause skin and scrotum tumors. Workers who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes are susceptible to cancer.

According to the EPA the EPA, it is a likely human cancer-causing agent. It has been linked to a number of different cancer types including esophageal and lung cancer.

Union Pacific Lawsuit Settlements of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote over the years due to an old rail yard located near their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their homes and soil and continues to spread underground.

The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the lawsuit against Union Pacific in federal court. They demand that the company test for contamination regularly and take preventative measures to prevent it from spreading.

A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote emitted from the former rail yard is contaminating the soil under their homes and causing serious health problems.

They are seeking compensation from the railroad in order to cover the cost of cleanup and other related costs. They claim that they have been suffering from environmental racism and discrimination as well as other forms of pollution that has affected them and their families.

Dioxin

Dioxins are a class of chemicals that don't break down quickly in the environment, and they can remain in the air, water, or sediment for a long time. They can be found in diverse sources, such as natural catastrophes, industrial accidents, smoking cigarettes, and the incineration process of hazardous waste.

Although the effects of dioxin on health in low concentrations aren't well-studied however, there is evidence to suggest that they could cause serious diseases like cancer. Higher levels of dioxin have been linked with an increased risk of heart disease, organ cancers immune disorders, and endocrine problems, such as hormonal imbalances. They can also cause reproductive problems, a depressed immune system, menstrual issues and diabetes, hair loss, weight loss and facial cysts, known as chloracne.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) the most frequent way that people are exposed to the toxins is through food and water. They are not volatile or water-soluble, so they are easily absorbable by the body via the intake of dairy products, meat such as fish, as well as other seafood.

It is important to remember that exposure to dioxins can have a detrimental effect on your health based on a variety of factors such as how much you eat, drink, and how often you breathe. You should also consider your gender, age, nutrition, and family traits to determine if you'll be exposed to dioxins.

Additionally, the type of contaminant is an important factor. According to the EPA there are some toxins that are more harmful than others for the health of humans. Polychlorinated biphenyls, also known as PCBs are more likely than creosote to cause harm to your health.

For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys, and liver. They also can harm the immune system and cause problems with the development of healthy teeth, bones, and bones.

Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for years about cluster of cancers that have been caused by the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is located close to their homes. The city's health department announced Friday that it had found cancer-causing substances in surface samples of the rail yard. The release said that the findings were "not encouraging." FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he plans on suing Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan proposed by Texas environmental regulators won't be sufficient.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

PCBs, also known as polychlorinated biphenylsare harmful chemicals that have been in use for more than 60 years in industrial and consumer products. After they were proven to cause cancer and inhibit the immune system PCBs were banned in 1979.

Once released into the environment, PCBs contaminate air, water, and soil across the world. They are powerful binders of organic matter and can be easily transported and accumulated in the environment.

PCBs are a significant concern for protecting the environment and public health. They are regarded as a possible human carcinogen by EPA and have been demonstrated to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Additionally, some studies have found a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially relevant for children who have been exposed to these chemicals during the pregnancy.

The most common route for exposure to PCBs is through food. Because they are the highest in PCBs Fish is the primary source of exposure. But, PCBs can also be found in beef and dairy and other agricultural products.

Showering and drinking water is another way to be exposed. This can be caused by leaks or spills that could occur in electrical and other equipment.

People may also be exposed to PCBs through breathing in air or by skin contact. These chemicals can trigger an illness known as chloracne which is a tiny, pale skin lesions that can last from a few weeks to a few years.

However, the effects of PCBs on the human body are not fully recognized. Researchers have suggested that they could cause liver and biliary cancers in humans. However further research is required to better understand how this impacts us.

EPA is also investigating whether these chemicals could cause birth defects in newborns, like lower birth weight. A low birth weight has been associated with Type II diabetes, insulin resistance and high blood pressure and later-life cardiovascular disease. In two studies, children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth, and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a highly toxic metal that is found in many items like paints pipes, and food cans. The body absorbs it through two main routes: respiratory and oral.

It is an extremely chemical that is oxidizing and can react with other chemicals in your environment. This could cause it to build up in the body and can lead to serious health problems like cancer and other ailments.

Houston residents who reside near the Union Pacific Railroad's creosote facility have a high rate of cancer. The city has asked for assistance from the federal government in cleaning up the railroad's contaminated facility.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of having its rail yard contaminated in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic to humans, like creosote. The railroad has been trying to remove the mess, but the plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not enough residents believe.

One of the major issues that resulted from the contamination was the groundwater plume under the homes in the region. A recent study conducted by health officials has shown that soil samples from the rail yard contain more creosote than is recommended for drinking water.

Another cause for concern is the slow evaporation of creosote from the atmosphere. As it does, it is causing residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors which are harmful to children as well as adults.

It is possible that the vapors cause cancer in people who inhale them. To find out more about the impact of the vapors in the lives of residents the neighborhood, a door-to-door survey being conducted in the neighborhood.

Union Pacific Lawsuit Settlements is a major problem for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. This is a tragic situation that must be addressed as soon as possible.

A Department of State Health Services study found that leukemia incidences were five times higher in children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens areas than was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more prevalent in the neighborhood than elsewhere in Texas.
