The settlement was made to settle a lawsuit alleging that IER discriminated against a worker who was authorized to work in the United States in its hiring process. The settlement requires MJFT to pay an amount of civil penalties, train employees in the relevant areas about the requirements of 8 U.S.C. Section 1324b. Doi claimed that Union Pacific was negligent in many ways, including failing to supervise and train its employees correctly. Union Pacific Houston Cancer argued that the railroad failed to provide proper safety procedures and did not adhere to industry standards. He was awarded $557 million by the jury.

A portion of the $557 million prize will also be used to fund his future medical expenses. The court will also make an order requiring the railroad to take steps to ensure that zone gang members have been properly trained and supplied with the required safety equipment and procedures to operate their vehicles.

Hallman, who was Torres's legal advisor, sought the court's approval for the settlement in accordance with Code of Civil Procedure fn. 1 section 877.6 which states that courts must approve settlements that are made in good faith. The trial court ruled that the settlements of both parties were made in good faith and therefore did not constitute an unfair or fraudulent act.

Medical Malpractice Settlements

Another instance involved a man who suffered serious injuries to his knee when it was damaged in an accident at work. He was able to recuperate a portion of his wages however the damages to his body and his career were significant. In addition, he was required undergo surgery to fix his knee.
