Discuss the importance of workplace layout and cleanliness in aircraft maintenance engineering

In this essay I am going to be talking about the importance of workplace layout and cleanliness and how it effect the performance of aircraft engineers.

Engineers have to ensure a high level of safety is present during every aspect of there work, this comes down to the general layout and tidiness of the physical working environment. Storage facilities for tools need to be kept tidy so that engineers are able to access correct tools accurately at all times, misplaced tools or incorrectly placed tools can lead to delays in tasks, and possibly taking the short route behind doing a task as an engineer may already have time restrictions and cannot find a specific tool they require to complete a task, as a result may choose the closest tool that is relevant to the task, this is incorrect practice and can cause damage to the tool and possible result in a mistake in the task. Also cleanliness of the tools and equipment as this ensures that the tool being used is able to conduct the task it is required to do so, rust building up on tools such as hammers can damage them and can decrease the strength and hardness of tools from corrosion.

Tidiness in the workplace can also mentioned when trying to locate certain documents such as the AMM that provides information to engineers on certain tasks and tells them about how and what should be done during the task, if the workplace is messing and untidy then engineers will struggle to find the supporting information they require to conduct there job, this can lead to time pressures. Especially with manuals and paper based information when this becomes untidy in a workplace near aircrafts this can impose serious fire hazards and potential trip hazards.

Overall, engineers should ensure that the work place is tidy and clean to allow ease of access to tools and information that can support engineers, without this adequate level of tidiness and cleanliness engineers can find themselves in time pressures and can potentially make the working environment unsafe.
