Playing Video Games Again
Wednesday, June 23, 2010:: Tagged under pablolife video games. 2 minutes.
Hey! Thank you for reading! This is a reminder that this article was written a long time ago and that I might have more complex feelings about the topic than I did back then. I am happy to expand, feel free to reach out to me!
A brief overview of my gaming video:
I started playing NES games when I was three years old. I played almost exclusively console games from that point until I reached the age of 14.
- A friend of mine from high school introduced me to Warcraft III, so I played it for a while. I was not very good. I quit playing all games except Warcraft III and Super Smash Bros. Melee. I flirted with the DC area of the high-level Melee scene, and was murdered.
In college I played Warcraft my first year. I discovered the competitive gaming scene, and a great site to play competitive Warcraft.
- I didn't play for the four years that followed.
I mostly mention this because a few weeks ago, I began playing again. This is partly due to my amazing neuroscience friend (now girlfriend _), which I am glad to be back.
You see, video games are the closest thing I have to sports, at least the role sports are usually played out, both in participation and viewing. I'll be contrasting with my dad's ability to go to bars to talk about the reasons why X trade was beneficial for the Nationals or even discuss Jordan's very brief career with the Wizards.
I don't know enough about my teams of choice to answer this question but I could explain why I enjoy watching ReMinD over Moon or why I still play as a solo DH against the majority of races. My dad is a fan of record games before the bed, but I prefer to play a replay to end the day.
However, as an athlete I find video games to give me something to work on and learn. Although the video is long, it's extremely enjoyable to watch and clarifies what I am trying to do extremely well.
For giggles, we love doing things and getting better at doing them. It's similar to practicing your foul shots. There's a feeling of satisfaction when you improve at playing games.
These are my thoughts about programming. However, video games have a softer learning curve (there's SO MUCH to computer science and programming) and aren't going to be my job.
With all that said to those who don't know and love the pro scene already, here are a few videos that could help. Worst Lies The first two are favorites: (context: in Korea, Starcraft games are televised and have many professional players. Luckily for us the announcers learned from Latin American Soccer Announcers rather than the drab English-speaking ones. Here's a fantastic casting of Plague (a Zerg spell):
Similar description of the death Reaver. Reaver (count the number of times they repeat it):
A Pro Smash (Melee), for those that have never seen it:
Finally, a great game between my favorite Terran players and Zerg players in Starcraft 2 beta has been broadcast. You can skip around if you don't watch the whole thing (which you won't. The game starts at 3:05):
Quickie on Atheism -
- Type Systems, From 1000 feet high
