Amazon today announced the Fire TV, an Android-based set top box that supports games and video streaming.
The Fire TV is now available for purchase at US$99. A separate controller worth $40 is also available that allows users to connect to Amazon's GameCircle social gaming service.
Fire runs "Mojito" - version 3.0 of the Android-based Kindle Fire OS. According to Amazon this will make it "simple for developers to port their apps and games to Fire TV."
It has it with a 1.7 quad-core GHz Qualcomm Krait 300 CPU, 2GB of RAM 8GB of storage as well as a Qualcomm Adreno 320 GPU and dual-band wireless radio as well as two antennas for 1080p streaming over 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.
The Fire also comes with HDMI and optical audio, with support for Dolby Digital Plus and 7.1 surround audio pass-through. It also has an Ethernet port and an USB 2.0 port.
According to Amazon the Fire TV will not compete directly with gaming consoles, however, it is targeted at people who don't own a console , but prefer to can play games on their smartphone or tablet.
Games available on Fire TV so far include Minecraft: Pocket Edition; Asphalt 8: Airborne, and an endless running game inspired by Pixar's Monsters University.
Amazon Game Studios is also creating original games for the box, including a hybrid first-person shooter/tower defense title called Sev zero.
Amazon declared that the median cost for a Fire TV game was US$1.85. Prices start at US$0.99 and there will be games that are free to play.
2K Games, Disney, Double Fine Productions, Electronic Arts, Sega, Telltale Games, and Ubisoft are all producing games for the Fire, and Amazon claimed "thousands" of games would be available by the end of next month.
The remote on the device is integrated with voice search, and the Fire will let you access photos stored on Amazon Cloud Drive, its X-Ray service for movies and TV shows and its streaming service.
A Twitch app is scheduled to launch in the near future, along with other services such as Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, Hulu, MLB.TV, and the WWE Network.
Fire TV will offer Pandora, iTunes Radio, as also songs bought through Amazon, starting in May.
