Minecraft YouTube Videos have been Watched 47bn Times

Adults and children alike aren't just playing Minecraft in millions of people: they're also watching YouTube videos made using Minecraft - and those videos are racking up billions of views.



Octoly, an online video provider has released a study that attempts to quantify this. It states that Minecraft videos were watched 30.8 billion times as of June 2014. Only 318 million of those views were from Mojang, Mojang's publisher.



This is nearly three times the amount of views for Grand Theft Auto videos. Octoly estimates that Grand Theft Auto was the second most-watched gaming brand on YouTube, with nearly 12 billion views. It was ahead of Call of Duty (10.2 Billion), Angry Birds (6 Billion) and Halo (4.8 Billion).

The company claims that, since June, Minecraft videos have been watched 16 billion times, taking its total to 47 billion views. "In June, our Octoly360 system found 81,000 separate YouTube creators who were talking about Minecraft," explained Octoly. "Today, there are almost twice as many creator channels that feature Minecraft videos than there were in June." Octoly explained.



Anyone who has been watching Minecraft and/or the evolution of YouTube over the past few years will not be surprised to see Minecraft so far ahead of its competitors.



Tubefilter published a chart listing the top 100 YouTube channels in September 2014. It used data from analytics firm OpenSlate to reveal that Stampy was a child-friendly Minecraft channel was the third-largest with 189.6 millions views.



The most popular of the month were channels with a heavy or total Minecraft focus including Vegetta (eighth in the world with 164 million views in September) and The Diamond Minecart (10th with 161.8 million).



Mojang has supported its YouTube community since the early days of Minecraft, avoiding copyright arguments with creators of videos, and avoiding any interference to the content of their videos.



"We have lots of people who earn their living by making videos about Minecraft. Vu Bui Mojang's chief operating director has told the Guardian that the profits of Minecraft are amazing.



"That isn't taking any of our advantages, and I would say it actually can be beneficial to Minecraft, to have people who are exceptionally talented and creative in their work. We've essentially outsourced YouTube videos to a global community of millions of people and what they come up with is far more inventive than anything we could ever create by ourselves."



YouTube is the primary reason Minecraft is so popular in 2014. It's also a significant factor in Microsoft's decision this summer to acquire Mojang at $2.5bn.



Microsoft is not just buying an online game that has sold more than 54m copies across console, mobile, and computer platforms. It's also buying one of the largest television brands in the world. Despite the fact that its massive popularity is online and not on traditional television.
