The Reasons Railroad Workers Is The Most Sought-After Topic In 2023
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn't taken the necessary steps to clean up an underground plume contaminated rail yard. Recent tests have revealed that the contamination may be in the vicinity of residents.

Researchers believe it's due to the high number of cancers that are found in the area. Two years into a state health investigation, they found higher-than-expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia as well as adult kidney and renal pelvis cancers within the communities around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote, a common chemical, is used to treat wood. It can also cause cancer in people exposed to it.

It is a dense oily substance which is black or amber in appearance and has a smoky smell and burnt taste. It is a coal-tar distillation product that has been used for more than 150 years to preserve wood.

In the United States, it is used to treat railroad ties as well as other types of wood, including fence posts, utility poles and marine pilings. It is also employed to protect log homes and other structures from insects and rot infestation.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), creosote is a potentially dangerous chemical. Exposure to it for short periods can cause irritation of the skin and eyes, chemical burns stomach discomfort, burning of the mouth or throat, and kidney or liver issues.

Long-term exposure could lead to skin and scrotum cancers. Workers who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes are at risk.

According to the EPA it is a likely human cancer-causing agent. Railroad Cancer Lawsuit has been linked with various cancers such as esophageal cancer as well as lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for a long time to creosote due to a former railroad yard close to their homes. They claim the chemical has caused soil and homes to be contaminated, and it continues to spread throughout the underground.

Railroad Cancer Lawyer and Houston have joined forces in the fight against Union Pacific in federal court. They demand that the company test for contamination on a regular basis and implement preventative measures to prevent it from spreading.

A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed an action against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote has contaminated their soil and caused major health problems from the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation for their illnesses and suffering and also damages from the railroad to cover the cost of cleaning and other associated costs. They claim they've been harmed by environmental racism discrimination, sexism, and other forms of pollution that affected their families as well as them.

Dioxin

Dioxins are chemical compounds that don't break down in the environment quickly and can remain in the air, water soil, or sediment for a long period. They can be derived from diverse sources, such as natural disasters, industrial accidents cigarette smoke and incineration of hazardous waste.

The effects of dioxin on health aren't clear at low levels, but there is evidence that dioxin may cause cancer as well as other serious illnesses. People who are exposed to higher levels of dioxin are found to be at greater risk of heart disease, organ cancers as well as immune system issues and endocrine imbalances such as hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to reproductive problems, a suppressed immune system, menstrual and diabetes issues, hair loss, weight gain and facial cysts called chloracne.

According to the U.S. Railroad Cancer Lawyer that people are exposed dioxin is through food or drinking water. They aren't volatile and water-soluble, which means they are more easily absorbed by the body through the intake of meat, dairy products such as fish, as well as other seafood.

It is crucial to keep in mind, however, that exposure can affect your health depending on many factors such as how much you drink, eat and the frequency you breathe. It is also crucial to consider your gender, age and nutrition status, as well as diet and family traits in addition to other factors in your health that could determine whether you'll be affected by dioxins or not.

The type of contaminant also important. The EPA states that certain toxins are more likely to have a damaging effect on human health than others. For instance, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a negative impact on your health than creosote.

For instance, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys, and liver. They can also damage a person's immune system and interfere with the growth of healthy bones and teeth.

For years, residents in Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have complained about a string of cancer deaths that have been tied to the Union Pacific rail yard, which is next to their communities. The announcement released on Friday by Houston's health department claimed that it had identified cancer-causing chemicals in surface samples near the rail yard. The announcement said the results were "not encouraging." FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he plans on suing Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan submitted by Texas environmental regulators won't be sufficient.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been used in industrial and consumer products for over 60 years. After they were proven to cause cancer and suppress the immune system, these chemicals were banned in 1979.

PCBs can be harmful to soil or water as well as air in a variety of regions of the globe once they are released into the environment. They are strong binding agents of organic matter, and are easily transported and accumulated into the environment.

PCBs are a significant concern for protecting the environment and public health. They are considered a probable human carcinogen by EPA and have been found to cause cancer in lab animals.

Some studies also link PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly true for children exposed to these chemicals while pregnant.

The most common route for exposure to PCBs is through food. Since they are the most abundant in PCBs Fish is the primary source of exposure. But, PCBs can also be found in dairy and beef and other agricultural products.

Another way to be exposed to PCBs is through drinking and showering with water that is affected by PCBs. This could be caused by leaks or spillages in electrical and other equipment.

Similarly, people can also be exposed to PCBs through breathing air or through the skin. These chemicals can trigger a condition called chloracne, which is a mild, small skin lesions that can last from weeks to years.

However the effects of PCBs on human health aren't fully understood. Researchers have suggested that they may cause liver and biliary cancers in humans. However there is more research needed to determine how this impacts us.

EPA has also been examining whether these chemicals may cause birth defects for newborns, including low birth weight. Railroad Cancer has been linked to insulin resistance, or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease later in the course of. Two studies revealed that children born with higher levels PCBs in their cord blood were born with lower birth weights and/or an earlier age.

Lead

Lead is a highly toxic metal that is found in a variety of items, such as paints, pipes and food containers. It is absorbed into the body through two main pathways: oral and respiratory.

It is a potent chemical that can oxidize and react with other chemicals in your environment. It can build up in the body, which can cause serious health problems like cancer and other ailments.

In Houston, people who live near a legacy creosote treatment facility run by Union Pacific Railroad have a high rate of cancer. The city has asked for the federal government's assistance in the cleanup of the railroad's contaminated site.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of having its rail yard contaminated in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic to humans, including creosote. Residents say that the company has been working to eliminate the contamination, but the proposal submitted to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.

One of the most significant problems that resulted from the contamination is the groundwater plume beneath homes in the area. A recent study by the health department shows that the amount of creosote that is present in soil samples in the rail yard is higher than the levels recommended for drinking water.

Another issue is that the creosote is slowly escaping into the air. It causes residents to breathe toxic levels of vapors which could be fatal for children as well as adults.

It is also possible that vapors are causing cancers in the residents who are breathing the vapors in. To find out more about the effects of the vapors on lives of residents the neighborhood, a door-to-door survey being done in the neighborhood.

This is a serious problem for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a very tragic situation that needs to be addressed immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study found that the rate of leukemia was five times higher among children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens areas than was expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more prevalent in these areas than elsewhere in Texas.
