He owned, controlled, or had interests in 50 corporations, including a large car dealership,a sugar mill called Consolidate Sugar Corporation, a real estate firm called Citizens Development Inc, and Philippine Seed Inc.
Marcos did not involve himself in politics, and distanced himself from his brother's regime when it grew unpopular during the 1980s.[citation needed] In a 1986 interview he said he was unaware of his brother's wealth. He did not join the Marcos family in Hawaii after the EDSA Revolution, and opted to stay in the Philippines in retirement.
In 1998 Marcos was the subject of a lawsuit over an under-collateralized "behest loan" in the amount of ₱60 million which his company, Bagumbayan Corp, received from the Development Bank of the Philippines. It was one of a series of lawsuits over behest loans given to associates of President Marcos. The case was finally dismissed in 2007 by the Supreme Court, which said there was no evidence that the loan was given simply because Pacifico Marcos was a "crony" of the former president.
The eulogy of Mrs. Ma.Theresa "Boots" Barba Nieves dedicated to her mother, the late Mrs. Fortuna Marcos Barba.
Good morning. Naimbag nga bigat kadakayo amin, apo.
My name is Boots and I am the eldest child and only daughter of Fortuna Marcos Barba. I have seven brothers after me.
Before anything else, on behalf of the whole family, I would like to thank you all for joining us today in celebration of the 86 wonderful years that a person named “Baby” spent on this earth.
In one way or another, Baby touched our lives with her zest for life and eagerness to be of assistance to others. She went by many names: Fortuna, Toni, Baby, Mrs. B, 797, FMB, Maria Clara and many many other endearing names. But of course for us, she will always be Mommy, Lola and to my apo Raphael, Lola Toni.
Who was Fortuna? Raphael put it real well in innocent irony: “ How can she be a lola and a baby at the same time?”
Those of you who knew her will understand that this statement makes a lot of sense. She was both a baby, delicate and fragile and pure and a lola who was very nurturing, giving and loving.
Mommy would give till it hurts, and even when she did not have much to give she still found a way to be a blessing to so many others. She was such a remarkably simple woman who was content and preferred to be behind the scenes, proudly supporting her siblings: Manong Andy, the President, Manong Paking, the doctor and Manang Beth, the gobernadora ...constantly trumpeting their success to all.
Apart from being known by so many names, Fortuna was also a Renaissance Woman. She tap danced into our hearts and galloped alongside us atop her trusty steed. She imparted knowledge to the youth as she drove that forehand down the line. She was dynamic , a woman of action.
Always looking for that proverbial silver lining in the clouds, Mommy's positive disposition would rub off on those around her while she easily earned the respect and trust of so many people. No situation was too bleak or ever too hopeless for her. For Mommy, there was always a way.
When my father Celing and my brothers Boboy and Jayjay passed away, Mommy told us to "let go " so they can rest in eternal peace. That is easier said than done, Mommy. I know one day we will all "let go" but for now, allow us to grieve.
This is probably the hardest goodbye for us to say because we know it will be the last one. You lived such a full and fruitful life and now you deserve to rest in the loving arms of the Father with whom you spent all your life devoted to.
Mommy, your sons Chito, Angelo, Dino, Fifay, and Vic, together with your grandchildren Lara, Paolo, Sandy and Cristina plus your great grandchild Raphael, my husband Roberto and I will miss you so very very much.
Again, I would like to thank you all for honoring the life of such an extraordinary woman today. We have but one request: Please keep her memory alive and burning in your hearts and minds by continuing to share stories about how Mommy touched your life.
Finally, we would like to thank you Lord God for giving us our mother Fortuna. We could not have been blessed more by the life you have allowed her to live. Please cradle our Baby Fortuna in your loving arms where she now belongs.
FORTUNA MARCOS BARBA ... Devoted Mother . Loving Wife. Beloved Sister. Dedicated Teacher. Devout Woman of God.
Today, "Earth has one gentle soul less. Heaven has one special angel more"!
