Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to clean up the creosote sludge that is buried at its rail yard that is contaminated. Recent tests have revealed that the contamination could be in the vicinity of residents.

Researchers believe it could be related to the elevated cancer rates in the region. Two years into a health study conducted by the state the researchers found higher than anticipated levels of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia and adult renal and kidney pelvis cancers within the communities around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote is one of the most common chemicals used to treat wood. It is also a cause of cancer in people exposed to it.

Railroad Cancer Lawyer is a thick oily substance, amber to black in color. It has a smokey scent and a burnt taste. It is a distillation of coal product and has been in use for more than 150 years as an ingredient in wood preservative.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote because of a former railroad yard right next to their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their soil, homes and continues to spread underground.

The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the lawsuit against Union Pacific in federal court. They are demanding that the company test for contamination regularly and implement preventative measures to prevent the spread.


A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote that was emitted from the former rail yard is contaminating soil beneath their homes and causing serious health issues.

They are seeking compensation for their illnesses and suffering and also damages from the railroad for the cost of cleanup and other associated costs. They claim they've been harmed by environmental racism and discrimination as well as other forms of pollution that affected them and their families.

Dioxin

Dioxins are chemicals which do not break down quickly in the environment, and they can be found in the soil, air, or sediment for an extended time. They are found in a variety of places that include natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarettes and incineration as well as hazardous waste.

Another concern is the slow escape of creosote in the air. It causes residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors, which are toxic for both children and adults.

It is also possible that the gases are causing cancers in the residents who are breathing the vapors in. A door-to-door health survey is currently being conducted in the neighborhood to find out more about the effects of the vapors on the residents' lives.

This is a serious issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a very tragic situation that must be addressed immediately.

A recent study conducted by the Department of State Health Services found that children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities contracted a form leukemia at five times higher rate than expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more prevalent in these neighborhoods than in other areas of Texas.
