How can I watch Evil Dead Rise from theaters?
Buckets of blood The Book of the Dead and a chainsaw? It's an Evil Dead movie, of which there really are no bad movies in the horror series. The same team that has been around since the beginning, starting with 1981's The Evil Dead, producer Rob Tapert and executive producers Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell (who was the original character Ash Williams), reunite for Evil Dead Rise.


The fifth installment is directed by director Lee Cronin, who updates the cabin-in-the-woods style to include an apartment situated in Los Angeles branded a "condemned dump" that will soon be demolished.

It's there where single mum Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) lives with her three children: teenaged Danny (Morgan Davies) and Bridget (Gabrielle Echols) and her daughter Kassie (Nell Fisher). The is a distant sister Beth (Lily Sullivan) is seen appearing out of the blue in the middle of the night. This is where the plot gets complicated - her arrival is shortly followed by an earthquake which forms a giant gap in the garage. Danny visits the garage and grabs some vinyl records as well as the Book of the Dead.

We learn that the building was once an old bank, but there's tons of religious memorabilia in the rubble, including an enormous crosses depicting Jesus Christ. How does this all connect? We're not sure. some connection to a safety deposit box. Do we care? Not really.

Danny unlocks his Book of the Dead and plays the recordings (listen out for an aural appearance by Campbell) that unleashes the demonic Deadites who take over Ellie.

The film is a constant bloodbath that delivers a frightful, shivering entertainment that makes you think, "This is what I was looking for!" The film offers people who love previous Evil Dead films something newly and claustrophobic, with the action taking place mainly inside the apartment as well as the hallway and unreliable lift. Yet, you don't need to be a fan of the previous films - this is watch-through-your-hands horror at its finest.

There are some wonderful small nuggets of information that refer to the original movies - like the eyeball being chomped on, creepy nursery rhymes, or even using silver tape for wrapping up wounds. It also has a strong allusion to The Shining's "elevator from blood" sequence. How do you not love this?

While Evil Dead II is viewed as a comedy horror, Evil Dead Rise is more of a gorefest that is all-out, although it does have moments like when Ellie, the possessed Ellie says to her kids that she's "free from the titty-sucking parasites that eat your flesh. "...

Sutherland is a scene-stealing actor as Ellie, who only needed very little prosthetics to enhance certain areas on her face. Her performance is absolutely amazing when she puts her children in danger and her sister by using knives or a tattoo gun as well as an ice grater to deliver one of her most visceral attack.

In the final showdown, Ellie is terrifying enough on her own , and she does not require all of these "extras" she's given here. There's nothing more effective than less when it comes to terror. Yet, when Beth, played with real intensity and a scrappy will to survive by Sullivan, revs that chainsaw and says, "Come get some," her own version of Ash's "groovy" is all that can be to be forgiven.


After scrapping together the funds and putting it to good use, the group began their creation of the campy innovative feature that would ultimately with a number of sequels, an off-broadway musical as well as a niche but beloved TV series. From a perspective of plot, there's nothing overly imaginative or innovative happening here, but believe us when we say that it isn't a problem. Since, at the end of the day, Evil Dead Rise is an amazing film with plenty of schlock and delightful gore to keep viewers on the edge of your seat, without the need for any actual plot.

The white-knuckle atmosphere of Evil Dead Rise can be set instantaneously when viewers are confronted with a whiplash-inducing first POV shot. It causes discomfort right off the bat, and successfully does not let up throughout the remainder of the movie's run. In the opening, it's perfectly unprecedented, and doesn't outstay its welcome. When the main bulk of the film really gets going, you almost forget that it ever took place.
