Railroad Cancer Settlement Amounts - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?
Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn't taken the necessary steps to clean up an underground plume contaminated rail yard. The most recent tests have shown that the contamination may be impacting residents living near.
Researchers suggest it could be due to higher cancer rates in the area. Two years after launching an investigation across the state on health and a study by researchers, they found that there were higher than expected rates of lymphoblastic childhood as well as adult kidney and pelvis cancers in the vicinity of the Union Pacific site.
Creosote
Creosote, a chemical commonly that is used to treat wood is also a popular one. It is also a dangerous substance and can cause cancers when exposed to it.
It is a thick oily substance, ranging from amber to black in color. It has a smokey smell and a bitter taste. It is a distillation of coal product that has been used for more than 150 years to preserve wood.
In the United States, it is used to treat railroad ties and other kinds of wood, including fence posts, utility poles, and marine pilings. It is also used to shield log homes and other structures from insects and rot infestation.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), creosote is potentially dangerous chemical. In short-term exposure, it can cause irritation of the skin and eyes and chemical burns stomach discomfort and burning of the mouth or throat and liver or kidney problems.
Long-term exposure could lead to skin and scrotum carcinomas. Workers who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment and other manufacturing processes are at risk.
It is believed to be a human carcinogen according to the EPA. It has been linked to a range of cancers of various types including esophageal and lung cancer.
Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote due to a former railroad yard right next to their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their homes as well as their soil and continues to spread underground.
Harris County and Houston have joined forces to fight Union Pacific in federal court. They want the company to test regularly for contamination and to take steps to stop it from spreading.
In October of 2017 the group of Fifth Ward neighbors sued Union Pacific. They claim that creosote had contaminated their soil and caused serious health problems from the former rail yard.
They are seeking compensation for their diseases and suffering as well as damages from the railroad for the cost of cleaning and other related costs. They also claim to be affected by environmental racism and discrimination, as well as other types of pollution that have impacted them and their families.
Dioxin
Dioxins are chemicals which don't break down in the environment in a timely manner and can stay in the air, in the soil or sediment for a lengthy period. They can be found in a variety places that include natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarette smoke, and incineration or hazardous waste.
The health effects of dioxin are unclear at low levels, but there is evidence to suggest that they can trigger cancer and other serious diseases. The people who are exposed to higher levels of dioxin are found to be at a higher risk of heart disease, organ cancers, immune system problems and endocrine changes, such as hormonal imbalances. They can also cause reproductive problems, a suppressed immune system, menstrual problems and diabetes, hair loss, weight loss and facial cysts known as chloracne.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) the most frequent way that people are exposed to the toxins is through food and water. They are not water-soluble or volatile, therefore they are more likely to be absorbed into the body through the consumption of dairy products, fish and other seafood.
It is important to remember that exposure can affect your health based on a variety of aspects, such as the amount you drink, eat and how often you breathe. It is also crucial to take into consideration your age, gender, diet, nutritional status and family characteristics along with other health factors that can affect whether you are affected by dioxins or not.
In addition, the type of contaminant is an important factor. The EPA says that some toxins are more likely to cause harm impact on human health than others. Polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs are more likely than creosote affect your health.
PCBs can cause damage to the eyes and kidneys, liver, and kidneys. They also can harm a person's immune system and hinder the growth of healthy bones and teeth.
Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for years about cluster of cancer deaths that are caused by the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is located close to their homes. The city's health department reported on Friday that it has found cancer-causing chemicals in surface samples around the rail yard. The announcement said the results were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's planning to take legal action against Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan presented to Texas environmental regulators wouldn't be adequate given the findings.
Polychlorinated Biphenyls
PCBs, also known as polychlorinated biphenyls, are toxic chemicals that have been in use for more than 60 years in consumer and industrial products. After they were proven to cause cancer and to suppress the immune system These chemicals were banned in 1979.
PCBs can be harmful to soil or water as well as air in many regions around the globe after they are released into the environment. They are strong binders of organic matter and can be easily transported and accumulated into the environment.
PCBs are a significant concern to protect the environment and public health. They are regarded as a possible human carcinogen by EPA, and have been demonstrated to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
In addition certain studies have found a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly relevant for children who have been exposed to these chemicals in the womb.
The main route of exposure to PCBs is through food items. Since they are the most abundant in PCBs, fish is the main source of exposure. But, PCBs can also be present in beef and dairy and other agricultural products.
Drinking and showering with PCB-contaminated water is another way to be exposed. This can happen from leaks or spills that could be caused by electrical or other equipment.
People can also be exposed to PCBs by breathing in air or by skin contact. These chemicals can trigger an illness known as chloracne which is a mild, small yellow skin lesions that can last for weeks or even years.
The effects of PCBs on the human body are not fully known. Researchers have suggested that they may cause biliary and liver cancers in humans. However it is necessary to conduct more research to understand how this affects us.
The EPA is also studying whether these chemicals might cause birth defects in newborn babies. A low birth weight has been associated with Type II diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in life. In two studies, children who were born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth, and/or later in childhood.
Lead
Lead is a poisonous metal and can be found in a wide range of products, including paints, pipes and food cans. The body can absorb it via two routes: the respiratory and oral.
It is a potent antioxidant and can react with other chemicals present in the environment. It can build up in the body, which could cause serious health problems like cancer and other ailments.
In Houston, people who live near a creosote treatment facility owned by Union Pacific Railroad have a high risk of developing cancer. The city has asked the federal government to order the railroad to clean the site that is contaminated.
The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of polluting its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with carcinogenic chemicals for humans, such as creosote. Residents claim that the railroad has been working to eliminate the contamination, but the plan that was submitted to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.
The groundwater plume that runs beneath the homes in the affected area is one of the most dangerous effects of the contamination. Railroad Cancer Settlements by the health department has shown that the concentration of creosote in soil samples near the rail yard is more than the recommended level for drinking water.
Another issue is the slow release of creosote to the atmosphere. As it escapes, it causes residents to breathe in dangerous levels of vapors that are harmful to children as well as adults.
Railroad Cancer Lawsuit Settlements is also possible that the vapors are causing cancers in the people who breathe the vapors. To learn more about the effects of the vapors in the lives of residents an in-depth survey of the residents is being conducted in the neighborhood.
This is a serious problem for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. It's a pity and should be resolved immediately.
A Department of State Health Services study discovered that leukemia rates were five times higher among children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhoods than was expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more common in these areas than elsewhere in Texas.
