Microsoft will Unify most 'Minecraft' Platforms This Summer

Minecraft is about to be released in its final form. The Better Together update will be released in August and will unify Minecraft across all platforms, including iOS, Android, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The Bedrock Engine powers all mobile, Windows 10 and Amazon Fire versions of Minecraft. FORUMS Now, it won't matter which platform your friends play on to play Minecraft -- every version will be identical as they will share updates and DLC and all players will be able to build new worlds.

Well, almost all. The first "Better Together” update did not include Minecraft versions for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 4.

Marketing lead Emily Orrson states, "Beginning with Xbox One or Nintendo Switch We'll extend the code base to ensure that everyone -the vast majority- of our community are united."

The Better Together update brings Bedrock to the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch versions of Minecraft which allows them to play with nearly every other version of the game. Consoles that are currently playing will be able to download Realms (the multiplayer mode in the game) and the new Community Marketplace. Any existing worlds will transfer directly to Bedrock and will be able to play with all DLC players have purchased. The update also adds infinite worlds to Xbox One and Switch, as opposed to the current limited grid of 3 miles by 3 miles.

"They've been asking for some relief there for a long time, and now they'll have the ability to walk right up inside of the worlds they've created and continue to generate them infinitely," says executive producer Jesse Merriam.

However, players on PS4, the most adored console in the current generation, won't be able to switch to Bedrock immediately.

"Our goal is to connect all Minecraft players," Merriam said. "Today we're able confirm Xbox One and Nintendo Switch as well as all of our current-gen partners -we're looking to connect all Minecraft players. It's just about what we can confirm today."

The Xbox 360 and PS4 versions of Minecraft will continue to have their own platform-specific names. However, the Java version will officially be called Minecraft: Java Edition. This is what most gamers call it anyway. Now, we have the main Minecraft game and three different versions (PS4, Xbox 360, and Java), which are not guaranteed to receive the same updates or cross-platform features. It's a welcome step toward unity, but not a complete leap just yet.

Orrson states that "we're very closely partnered with Apple, Google and PlayStation, Nintendo, Amazon -many times, it's not enough to ensure we're always working in every store and everything else." "Right now, we're trying to get everyone connected, but it is hard to navigate through all the scenarios we face.

Microsoft bought Minecraft in 2014 for $2.5 billion which is why it's only natural that the Xbox One version is getting some love in the Better Together update. Of course, Sony builds the PS4.

Aubrey Norris, senior global communications manager, stated that "it's not because we don't want or need to exert effort." "We are currently discussing this with our partners. We are interested in PlayStation and we would like to invite Sony to bring PlayStation players to Bedrock. However these are private conversations.

Mojang and Microsoft are not finished with Minecraft. Better Together is part a larger push for Minecraft to be a "creative platform." Developers want it to be more than just a game. It should be the foundation of community-driven innovation, connectivity, and creativity.

The Community Marketplace, which hit Pocket and Windows 10 editions in June was a major aspect of this transition, allowing players to search for, buy and sell their own in-game creations.

Servers are also receiving some attention in Better Together. The servers allow players to play around in completely unique worlds created by dedicated players. The Servers tab will be located between the "Worlds", "Friends" and "Friendstabs upon starting up. This will introduce a whole new group of players to fan-favorite worlds such as Lifeboat which was developed by a 14 year-old boy and his dad. Lifeboat boasts 6,000,000 players per month. Initial servers landing on Bedrock include Lifeboat, CubeCraft, Mineplex and InPvP.

One final update will make Minecraft even more self-contained. an integrated recipe book for crafting.

"We would like to combine the strengths of the existing crafting systems together," Merriam says. "The Java edition is known for its ability to discover and experiment by going to the crafting grid to test out different techniques and ultimately find the right recipe.

The recipe book allows players to switch recipes directly within the crafting grid, removing the need to set down the game and find the Wiki page for the recipe. But, those who want to experiment with recipes can skip the book entirely.

Merriam states, "Anyone who has interacted with a fervent Minecraft player will be aware that there's a lot pride a child will feel if they have the recipe for a vessel."
