5 Railroad Workers Lessons From Professionals
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to remove creosote in the underground air at its rail yard that is contaminated. And now, the most recent tests suggest that the contamination could continue to affect people who live nearby.

Researchers believe it could be related to the elevated cancer rates in the area. Two years after the launch of an investigation across the state on health the researchers discovered that there were higher than expected rates of lymphoblastic cancer in children as well as adult kidney and pelvis cancers in the area surrounding the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote, a common chemical, is used in the treatment of wood. It is also a dangerous substance and can cause cancers when exposed to it.

It is a thick oily substance that's black or amber-colored and has a smoky odor and a burnt flavor. It is a coal-tar distillation product that has been used for over 150 years as a wood preserver.

In the United States, it is used to treat railroad ties as well as other kinds of wood, including fence posts, utility poles, and marine pilings. It is also used for protecting log structures and homes from decay and insect infestation.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) creosote can be an extremely dangerous chemical. Exposure to it for short periods can cause eye and skin irritation as well as chemical burns stomach discomfort, burning of the throat or mouth, and kidney or liver problems.

Long-term exposure can lead to skin and scrotum tumors. This is a serious concern for workers who are in direct contact with it during wood treatment or in other manufacturing processes.

It is believed to be a human carcinogen according to the EPA. It has been linked with a variety of cancers that include esophageal aswell as lung cancer.

Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote for years, thanks to a former rail yard near their homes. They claim that the chemical has contaminated their homes and soil and continues to spread throughout the underground.

Harris County and Houston have joined the effort against Union Pacific in federal court. They demand that the company test for contamination regularly and adopt preventative measures to stop it from spreading.

Railroad Cancer Lawsuit of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote from the former rail yard is contaminating the soil beneath their homes and causing serious health issues.

They are seeking compensation from the railroad in order to cover the cost of cleanup and other related costs. They claim they have been harmed by environmental racism, discrimination, and other kinds of pollution that have affected their families as well as them.

Railroad Workers Cancer Lawsuit are chemicals which do not break down in the environment quickly and can remain in the air, soil or sediment for a long time. They can be found in a variety places, including natural disasters and industrial accidents, cigarette smoke, and incineration or hazardous waste.

Although the effects of dioxin on health at low levels aren't yet known however, there is evidence to suggest that they can cause serious illnesses like cancer. Higher levels of dioxin are linked to a higher risk for organ cancers, heart disease immune disorders, and endocrine issues, including hormonal imbalances. They can also cause problems with hormones, immune suppression, diabetes, menstrual issues and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the most frequent way that people are exposed to dioxin is through drinking water or food. Railroad Cancer Lawyer nor water-soluble, therefore they are more easily absorbable by the body via the consumption of meat, dairy products as well as fish and other seafood.

It is nevertheless important to be aware that the amount of exposure that has detrimental effects on your health will depend on various factors, including the amount you eat or drink, how often you consume alcohol or food, and the amount of air you breathe. It is also important to consider your gender and age, your diet, and family traits to determine if you will be exposed to dioxins.

The kind of contaminant used is equally important. According to the EPA there are some toxins that are more dangerous than others to human health. Polychlorinated Biphenyls, or PCBs are more likely than creosote affect your health.

PCBs can cause damage to eyes as well as the liver, kidneys and kidneys. They can also harm the immune system and cause issues with the growth of healthy bones, teeth, and bones.

Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for a long time about cluster cancer deaths caused by the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is situated close to their homes. The announcement made by the city's health department stated that it found cancer-causing chemicals on surface samples near the rail yard. The release said that the findings were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's going to sue Union Pacific over the matter and said that a proposal submitted to Texas environmental regulators won't be adequate given the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are harmful chemicals that have been used in consumer and industrial products for over 60 years. Railroad Cancer were banned in 1979 following they were found to cause cancer, suppress the immune system, and impair learning.

After being released into the atmosphere, PCBs contaminate air, water, and soil in a variety of areas around the world. They are powerful binders of organic matter, and are easily transported and then accumulated in the environment.

PCBs are a major concern for protecting the environment and public health. The EPA considers them a probable human carcinogen and has proved that they can cause cancer in lab animals.

In addition certain studies have found a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially true for children exposed to these chemicals while pregnant.

PCBs are most commonly ingested through food items. Because they are the highest in PCBs fish is the primary source of exposure. However, PCBs can also found in dairy products, beef, and other agricultural products.

Another way to get exposed to PCBs is through drinking and showering with water that is infected with PCBs. This could be due to leaks or spills in electrical or other equipment.

In the same way, people can be exposed to PCBs through breathing air or through skin. These chemicals can trigger a condition called chloracne, which is a mild, small yellow skin lesions which can last from a few weeks to a few years.

The effects of PCBs on the health of humans aren't completely comprehended. Researchers have suggested that they could cause biliary and liver cancers in humans. However, more research is needed to better understand how this impacts us.

The EPA is also examining whether these chemicals could cause birth defects in newborn babies. A low birth weight has been linked to Type II diabetes, insulin resistance and high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease later in life. Two studies found that children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower birth weights and/or a later age.

Lead

Lead is a poisonous metal and is found in a wide range of products, including pipes, paints and food cans. It can be absorbed by the body via two main routes: respiratory and oral.

Railroad Cancer Lawyer is a potent oxidizing chemical and can react with other chemicals in your environment. It can build up in the body, and could lead to serious health issues such as cancer and other ailments.

Houston residents who live near to the Union Pacific Railroad's creosote facility are at a high risk of cancer. The city has asked for assistance from the federal government in the cleanup of the railroad's contaminated facility.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of contamination of its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic to humans, including creosote. The company has been trying to get rid of the contamination, but the plan presented to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not sufficient residents say.

Groundwater plume below the homes in the affected area is among the most serious consequences of the contamination. A recent study by the health department has shown that the concentration of creosote found in soil samples near the rail yard is more than the level recommended for drinking water.

Another concern is the gradual release of creosote into the atmosphere. It is causing residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors that can be harmful to children as well as adults.

It is also possible that the vapors are causing cancers in those who breathe the vapors in. A door-to-door health assessment is being conducted in the neighborhood to understand how the vapors are impacting the lives of the residents.

This is a serious problem for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a very tragic situation that needs to be addressed immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study discovered that leukemia rates were five times higher in children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens areas than was expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more common in these neighborhoods than in other areas of Texas.
