10 Tips To Build Your Railroad Workers Empire
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to remove the creosote sludge that is buried at its rail yard that is contaminated. Now, the most recent tests show that the contamination could still be affecting those who live near.

Researchers believe it could be related to the elevated cancer rates in the region. Two years into a health inspection by the state they discovered higher than expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia as well as adult kidney and pelvis cancers within the communities around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote is a common chemical that is used in the treatment of wood. It is also a poisonous substance that can cause cancer in those exposed to it.

It is a dense, oily substance that is black or amber in color and has a smokey odor and a burnt taste. It is a distillation of coal product that has been used for over 150 years to preserve wood.

It is widely used in the United States to treat railroad tiesand other types of woods like fence posts, utility poles, and pilings for marine use. It is also used to protect log homes and other structures from insect infestation.

Cancer Lawsuits United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says creosote is a risky chemical. Exposure to it for short periods can cause eye and skin irritation and chemical burns, stomach discomfort and burning in the throat or mouth and liver or kidney issues.

Exposure for long periods can cause skin and scrotum cancers. Workers who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes are at risk.

Railroad Workers is regarded as a possible human carcinogen according to the EPA. It has been linked to a variety kinds of cancers such as esophageal or lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote because of a former railroad yard close to their homes. They claim that the chemical has caused soil and homes to be contaminated, and continues to spread underground.

Harris County and Houston have joined the effort against Union Pacific in federal court. They are requesting that the company tests regularly for contamination and take measures to prevent it from spreading.

In October of 2017 a group of Fifth Ward neighbors sued Union Pacific. They claim that creosote contaminated their soil and caused significant health problems from the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation from the railroad to cover the costs of cleaning up and other related costs. They also claim that they are affected by environmental racism and discrimination, and other types of pollution that have affected their families and themselves.

Dioxin

Dioxins are chemicals which do not break down in the environment in a timely manner and can stay in the air, in the soil or in sediment for a lengthy period. They can be found in a variety of places that include natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarettes and incineration as well as hazardous waste.

The health effects of dioxin are unclear at low levels, but there is evidence that they may cause cancer as well as other serious diseases. Higher levels of dioxin are linked to a higher risk for organ cancers, heart disease immune disorders, and endocrine problems, including hormonal imbalances. They can also cause hormonal issues, suppressed immunity as well as diabetes, menstrual problems and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most frequent way that people are exposed is through water and food. They aren't liquid or volatile, which means they are more likely to be in the body through the consumption of meat, dairy products, fish, and other seafood.

But it is important to remember that the amount of exposure that can have adverse effects on your health depends on various factors, including the amount you eat or drink, the frequency you consume alcohol or food, and the amount of air you breathe. It is also crucial to take into consideration your gender, age as well as your diet, nutritional status and family traits, as well as other health factors that may influence whether you will be affected by dioxins or not.

In addition, the form of contaminant can be an important aspect. The EPA says that some toxins are more likely to cause harm impact on health than others. Polychlorinated Biphenyls, or PCBs, are more likely than creosote to have a negative effect on your health.

PCBs can cause damage to eyes and kidneys, liver, and kidneys. They also can harm the immune system and cause issues with the growth of healthy teeth, bones and bones.

Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for years about cluster of cancers that have been linked to the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is located close to their homes. The city's health department reported on Friday that it has found cancer-causing chemical compounds in surface samples near the rail yard. The release noted that the results were not a good sign. Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he plans to take legal action against Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan presented to Texas environmental regulators won't be sufficient in light of the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been employed in industrial and consumer products for over 60 years. Union Pacific Lawsuit Settlements were banned in 1979 following being proven to cause cancer, inhibit the immune system, and interfere with learning.

PCBs can be harmful to soil and water as well as air in many parts of the globe once they are released into the environment. They are strong binding agents of organic matter and can be easily transported and accumulated into the environment.

Therefore, PCBs are a major issue for the protection of public health and the environment. They are considered a probable human carcinogen by EPA, and have been proven to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

In addition, some studies have linked PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially the case for children exposed these chemicals in the womb.

The main route of exposure to PCBs is through food. Fish is the primary source of exposure because they are the source of the most PCBs. But, PCBs can also be found in beef and dairy and other agricultural products.

Another method of being exposed to PCBs is by drinking or showering with water that is polluted with PCBs. This could be the result of leaks or spillages in electrical and other equipment.

In the same way, people can be exposed to PCBs through breathing in air or by touching the skin. These chemicals can trigger a condition called chloracne, which is a mild, small skin lesions that can be present for a period of weeks or years.

However the effects of PCBs on human health aren't fully understood. Some researchers have suggested that they could cause liver and biliary tract cancers in humans, but more studies are needed to understand how this affects us.

The EPA is also studying whether these chemicals could cause birth defects in newborns. Low birth weight has been linked to Type II diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and later-life cardiovascular disease. Two studies have shown that children born with higher levels PCBs in their cord blood had lower birth weights , and/or older.

Lead

Lead is a poisonous metal that is found in a variety of products, including pipes, paints, and food cans. It is absorbed into the body through two major pathways: oral and respiratory.

It is a strong oxidizing chemical and can react with other chemicals in your surroundings. This can cause it to accumulate within the body. This can lead to serious health problems such as cancer and other ailments.

Houston residents who live near the Union Pacific Railroad's creosote-based plant that is its legacy have a high rate of cancer. The city has asked the federal government to direct the railroad to remove its toxic site.

Union Pacific Railroad has a past history of caused harm to its Fifth Ward rail yard and Kashmere Garden neighborhood with chemicals that could cause cancer. The railroad has been trying to clean up the mess, but a plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not sufficient residents believe.

The groundwater plume that runs beneath the homes in the affected area is one of the most grave consequences of the contamination. A recent study conducted by health officials has shown that soil samples taken from the rail yard contain more creosote than the recommended amount for drinking water.

Another concern is the slow evaporation of creosote in the air. It causes residents to breathe harmful levels of vapors which could cause death for both children and adults.

It is possible that the vapors could cause cancer in those who breathe them. To learn more about the impact of the vapors in the lives of residents an in-depth survey of the residents is being conducted in the neighborhood.

This is a major problem for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. This is a tragic situation and it should be resolved immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study found that leukemia rates were five times higher among children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens areas than was expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more prevalent in the neighborhood than they were elsewhere in Texas.
