Minecraft graphics to be more 'realistic'

Microsoft has announced a separate boost to enhance the visuals of Minecraft blocks-based games, just days aftercancelling an update to graphics that was delayed.



This update enhances how light bounces around Minecraft scenes to make them appear more "realistic".



The graphics patch will only be available to Nvidia RTX users.



Microsoft said it would be released in 2020 , but did not give a specific date.

Hefty price

The RTX graphics cards employ a technique called "ray tracing" which gives a greater understanding of how light bounces around the virtual world in games.



It can make on-screen visuals appear more realistic because shadows as well as the lighting effects in game environments will appear more real.



"Ray tracing is at the core of what we think will come next for Minecraft," stated Saxs Persson (creative director of Minecraft at Microsoft) in a statement.



"In normal Minecraft, a block of gold just appears yellow however, when ray tracing is turned on, you really see the specular highlight, you are able to see the reflection, and you might even see a mob of people reflected in it," he said.



Katharine Castle wrote that the Rock Paper Shotgun game's update appeared "impressive in practice" on the Rock Paper Shotgun news website.



She also mentioned that she was worried about how easy Minecraft's RTX updates will be to use.



Ms Castle said it would take a "hefty" RTX card to run all of the different lighting, shadow and atmospheric effects at the same time.

A Minecraft player is unable to play for five years.


The prices of Nvidia cards differ widely across online retailers, but low-end cards typically cost more than PS300, The most expensive models in the range can cost thousands. This update will only be available for Windows 10.



Mojang, the Minecraft maker said that the update would be available via the settings screen. This will allow users to test it while it is being developed.



It also stated that it was working on overhauling Minecraft's graphics engine. It said that this could bring some improvements in visuals for those who don't have an RTX graphics card or do not play the game on the PC.



"Not all devices will support Ray Tracing, however we will have some graphics enhancements for the majority of devices," said Mojang. No date has been given for when the general update will be available.



Both announcements were made on the day before the Gamescom gaming convention, which runs this week in Cologne.



News about the RTX release came just one week after Microsoft announced it was cancelling the "Super Duper Graphics" update for Minecraft.



The announcement was made in 2017, and promised to improve the appearance of the game on all devices on which the game was played.



The update was pulled after two years of development because the "technical challenges" of producing it been insurmountable.
