Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?
For Lung Cancer Lawsuit Settlements , residents of Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to remove an underground plume of creosote at its rail yard that is contaminated. And now, the latest tests show the contamination could still be affecting people who live near.
Researchers believe it's due to the high rate of cancers in the region. Two years after launching a state-wide health investigation the researchers discovered that there were higher than anticipated rates of childhood lymphoblastic as well as adult kidney and pelvis cancers in the area surrounding the Union Pacific site.
Creosote
Creosote, a common chemical, is employed in the treatment of wood. It is also a cause of cancer in people exposed to it.
Csx Lawsuit Settlements is a dense oily substance that ranges from amber to black in color. It has a smokey scent and a burnt taste. It is a coal-tar distillation product that has been used for more than 150 years as a wood preserver.
It is used in the United States to treat railroad tiesand other types of woods, like fence posts, utility poles, and pilings for marine structures. It is also used to safeguard log homes and other structures from insects and rot infestation.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Creosote is a potentially dangerous chemical. A short-term exposure could cause skin and eye irritation chemical burns stomach discomfort, burning of the throat or mouth, and kidney or liver problems.
Long-term exposure could lead to skin and scrotum tumors. Workers who come into direct contact with it during wood treatment and other manufacturing processes are susceptible to cancer.
It is considered a probable human carcinogen as per the EPA. It has been linked with a variety of different cancer types, including esophageal and lung cancer.
Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for a long time to creosote thanks to a former railroad yard close to their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their homes, soil and is spreading underground.
The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the effort to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They demand that the company test regularly for contamination and to take measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote had contaminated their soil and caused significant health problems as a result of the former rail yard.
They are seeking damages from the railroad to pay the cost of cleanup as well as other related costs. They claim they have suffered the effects of environmental racism and discrimination as well as other kinds of pollution that have affected their families as well as them.
Dioxin
Dioxins are a class of chemicals that do not break down quickly in the environment, and can remain in the air, water, soil or in sediment for a long period of time. They can come from many sources, such as natural catastrophes, industrial accidents cigarette smoke and incineration of hazardous waste.
Although the health effects of dioxin in low concentrations aren't known but there is evidence that they can trigger serious illnesses like cancer. Higher levels of dioxin are linked to a higher risk for organ cancers, heart disease, immune problems, and endocrine issues, like hormonal imbalances. They can also cause hormonal problems, suppressed immunity and diabetes, menstrual issues and weight loss.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most common way people are exposed is through water and food. They are not volatile or water-soluble, which means they are more easily taken in by the body through the consumption of dairy products, meat such as fish, as well as other seafood.
It is vital to remember that exposure to chemicals can affect your health, depending on many factors , including how much you consume, drink, and the frequency you breathe. It is also essential to consider your age, gender and diet, nutritional status and family traits, as well as other health factors that could affect your risk of being affected by dioxins or not.
The type of contaminant is equally important. According to the EPA the EPA, certain toxins are more harmful than others to human health. Polychlorinated biphenyls, also known as PCBs, are more likely than creosote to negatively impact your health.
For instance, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys and liver. They can also damage the immune system and cause problems with the development of healthy teeth, bones, and bones.
For years, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a string of cancer-related deaths that has been tied to the Union Pacific rail yard, which is located near their neighborhoods. Railroad Cancer Settlement Amounts announced on Friday that it had found cancer-causing chemicals in surface samples from the rail yard. The release said that the results were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's planning to sue Union Pacific over the matter, and said a plan submitted to Texas environmental regulators wouldn't be adequate in light of the findings.
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been used in industrial and consumer products for over 60 years. After they were proven to cause cancer and inhibit the immune system These chemicals were banned in 1979.
Once released into the natural environment, PCBs contaminate air, soil, and water in a variety of areas around the world. They are powerful binders of organic matter, and are transported easily and accumulated in the environment.
As a result, PCBs are a major threat for the protection of health and safety of people and the environment. They are regarded as a possible human carcinogen by EPA, and have been demonstrated to cause cancer in lab animals.
Certain studies also link PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly applicable to children who have been exposed to these chemicals during the pregnancy.
PCBs are most commonly consumed through food. Since they are the most abundant in PCBs Fish is the primary source of exposure. However, PCBs can also be present in beef and dairy and other agricultural products.
Showering or drinking PCB-contaminated water is another way to be exposed. This can happen from spills or leaks that may occur in electrical and other equipment.
People may also be exposed to PCBs by breathing in the air or by skin contact. These chemicals can cause the condition known as chloracne which is a mild, small yellow skin lesions which can last for weeks or even years.
However, the effects of PCBs on human health are not yet fully comprehended. Some researchers have suggested that they could cause liver and the biliary tract cancers among humans, however more studies are needed to determine the extent to which this impacts us.
EPA has also been examining whether these chemicals may cause birth defects in newborns, like low birth weight. The low birth weight of newborns has been linked to insulin resistance or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease later in the course of. Two studies found that children with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower birth weights , and/or later in life.
Lead
Lead is a toxic metal that can be found in many products like paints, pipes and food cans. The body absorbs it through two routes: respiratory and oral.
It is a potent antioxidant and is prone to react with other chemicals in the environment. This can cause it to accumulate in the body and can cause serious health issues like cancer and other illnesses.
Houston residents who reside near the Union Pacific Railroad's creosote legacy plant are at a high risk of cancer. The city has requested the federal government to instruct the railroad to clean up its contaminated facility.
Union Pacific Railroad has a history in which it has caused harm to its Fifth Ward rail yard and Kashmere Garden neighborhood with chemicals that could cause cancer. Residents say that the company has been trying to eliminate the contamination, but the proposal submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not sufficient.
One of the biggest problems that resulted from the contamination was the groundwater plume under the homes in the area. A recent study conducted by the department of health shows that the concentration of creosote present in soil samples around the rail yard is greater than the recommended level for drinking water.
Another concern is that the creosote is slowly escaping into the air. As Railroad Cancer Settlements escapes, it is causing residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors which are toxic for both children and adults.
It is possible that the vapors cause cancer among those who inhale them. To learn more about the effect of the vapors in the lives of residents, a door-to-door survey is being done in the neighborhood.
This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. It is a sad situation and it should be taken care of immediately.
A Department of State Health Services study found that the rate of leukemia was five times higher in children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhoods than what was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more common in these areas than in other areas of Texas.
