Railroad Workers Tools To Enhance Your Life Everyday
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn't taken the necessary steps to clean up an underground plume that is contaminated rail yard. The latest tests show that the contamination could still be affecting people who live near.

Researchers believe it could be due to higher cancer rates in the area. Two years after launching an investigation into health issues across the state, researchers found that there were higher than expected rates of lymphoblastic cancer in children and adult pelvis and kidney cancers in the region around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote, a chemical commonly that is used to treat wood, is also a common one. It can also cause cancer in those exposed to it.

It is a dense, oily substance that is black or amber-colored and has a smoky smell and a burnt taste. It is a coal-tar distillation product that has been used for over 150 years as a wood preserver.

It is employed in the United States to treat railroad ties, as well as other types of woods, including fence posts and utility poles, and pilings for marine use. It can also be used to shield log homes and other structures from insect infestation.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), creosote is potentially dangerous chemical. A short-term exposure could cause irritation to the skin and eyes and chemical burns, stomach discomfort and burning in the throat or mouth and liver or kidney problems.

Long-term exposure could lead to skin and scrotum tumors. Workers who come into direct contact with it during wood treatment and other manufacturing processes are susceptible to cancer.

According to the EPA, it is a possible human cancer-causing agent. It has been linked with various cancers which include esophageal, as well as lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for a long time to creosote because of a former railroad yard close to their homes. They claim that the chemical has contaminated their homes and soil and continues to spread underground.

The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the initiative to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They are demanding that the company test for contamination regularly and adopt preventative measures to stop it from spreading.

Railroad Workers And Cancer of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote that was emitted from the former rail yard is contaminating soil under their homes and causing serious health problems.

They are seeking compensation for their illnesses and suffering and damages from the railroad to cover the cost of cleaning and other costs. They claim that they have been harmed by racism in the environment and discrimination, as well as other kinds of pollution that have affected their families as well as them.

Dioxin

Dioxins are chemicals which do not break down quickly in the environment and they can remain in the air, water, soil or sediment for an extended period of. They are found in a variety of locations such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarettes and incineration, as well as hazardous waste.

Although the effects of dioxin on health in low concentrations aren't yet known but there is evidence that they could cause serious illnesses , such as cancer. People exposed to higher levels are believed to have an increased risk of organ cancers, heart disease, immune system disorders and endocrine issues like hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to hormonal problems, suppressed immunity, diabetes, menstrual issues and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most popular way people are exposed to the toxins is through food and water. They aren't volatile and water-soluble, therefore they are more easily to be absorbed by the body through the intake of meat, dairy products fish, and other seafood.

It is important to remember that exposure to dioxins can be detrimental to your health, depending on many aspects, such as the amount you drink, eat, and the frequency you breathe. Union Pacific Cancer is also important to take into account your gender and age, nutritional status, and family traits to determine if you will be exposed to dioxins.

The kind of contaminant used is crucial. The EPA says that some toxins are more likely to cause harm impact on health than others. Polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, are more likely than creosote affect your health.

For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys and liver. They can also affect the immune system and cause issues with the development of healthy teeth, bones, and bones.

For years, residents in Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have complained about a rash of cancer deaths that has been connected to the Union Pacific rail yard, which is located near their homes. The city's health department reported on Friday that it had found cancer-causing chemicals in surface samples around the rail yard. The release stated that the findings were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he plans to sue Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan that he has submitted to Texas environmental regulators won't be sufficient in light of the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been used in industrial and consumer products for over 60 years. After being proven to cause cancer and inhibit the immune system PCBs were banned in 1979.

When released into the environment, PCBs contaminate air, soil, and water throughout the world. They are extremely binders to organic matter and tend to remain in the environment for a long time, meaning they are relatively easy to transport and build up in the environment.

PCBs are a major concern for protecting the environment as well as public health. The EPA is adamant that they are a human carcinogen and has proved that they can cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Some studies also show a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly true for children who have been exposed to these chemicals while in the womb.

The main route of exposure to PCBs is through food. Since they are the most abundant in PCBs Fish is the primary source of exposure. But, PCBs can also be found in dairy and beef and other agricultural products.

Drinking and showering with PCB-contaminated water is another way to be exposed. This could be due to leaks or spills that occur in electrical and other equipment.

In the same way, people can be exposed to PCBs by breathing in air or through skin. These chemicals can trigger the condition known as chloracne which is a small, pale yellow skin lesions which can last for weeks or even years.

However Union Pacific Cancer of PCBs on the human body are not fully understood. Researchers have suggested that they may cause biliary and liver cancers in humans. However, more research is needed to determine how this impacts us.

The EPA is also investigating whether these chemicals might cause birth defects in newborns. The low birth weight of newborns has been linked with insulin resistance or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease later in life. Two studies have shown that children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower birth weights or older.

Lead

Lead is a toxic metal that can be found in many items including paints, pipes, and food cans. The body can absorb it through two main routes: the respiratory and oral.

It is a potent antioxidant that can react with other chemicals in the environment. It is able to accumulate within the body, which could lead to serious health issues like cancer and other ailments.

In Houston residents living near a creosote legacy treatment plant run by the Union Pacific Railroad have a high risk of developing cancer. The city has requested the federal government to direct the railroad to clean its contaminated facility.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of contaminating its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic for humans, such as creosote. Residents claim that the railroad has been working to get rid of the pollution, but the plan presented to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.

The groundwater plume that runs beneath the homes in the affected area is among the most dangerous effects of the contamination. A recent study conducted by the health department shows that the amount of creosote that is present in soil samples near the rail yard is much higher than the level recommended for drinking water.

Another concern is the slow release of creosote into the atmosphere. It is causing residents to breathe in dangerous levels of vapors, which are harmful for children as well as adults.

It is also possible that gases are causing cancers in those who breathe the vapors in. To find out more about the effects of the vapors on the lives of residents, a door-to-door survey is being done in the neighborhood.

This is a major problem for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. It's a sad state of affairs and must be addressed immediately.

A recent study by the Department of State Health Services discovered that children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities contracted a type leukemia at five times more frequently than was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more common in these neighborhoods than elsewhere in Texas.
