Three Indian Rapper Murderers Are Arrested

Indian police have arrested three men suspected of murdering hip-hop singer Sidhu Moose Wala, seizing weapons including an grenade launcher from the suspects.

Moose Wala, also known as Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu was last month murdered in his car in the northern state Punjab.



The 28-year-old was a well-known musician both in India and also among Punjabi communities across the globe, particularly in Canada and Britain.



Special police commissioner H.S. Dhaliwal told reporters in Delhi on Monday that three suspects had been detained in the western state of Gujarat over the weekend.



Police recovered explosive grenades with high explosives, a rocket launcher, an assault rifle, as well as electronic detonators from the suspects.



Local media reports suggested that Canadian-based gangster Goldy Brar had claimed responsibility for arranging the rapper's murder and was in touch with the hitmen the day of the crime.



"Brar called one of the shooters on the day of the incident and instructed him to ensure the execution of Moose Wala," the Hindustan Times newspaper quoted a police officer as saying.



"If guns fail to work and you can't kill him, then kill him in the form of a blast that was his instruction," the officer told the newspaper.



Moose Wala became famous for his catchy songsthat attacked political opponents and rappers. He presented himself as a man who stood up to preserve the pride of his community and delivered justice, as well as killed off enemies.



He was criticised for promoting gun culture through his music videos where he often shot with guns.



His death also put the spotlight on organized crime in Punjab as a major transit route for the flow of drugs into India from Afghanistan and Pakistan.



Many observers attribute the increase in violence among gangs and the rise in the use of illegal weapons to the market for narcotics, which mainly includes heroin and opium.
