'Minecraft' Studio Wants nothing to be Associated With NFTs

Don't be expecting to purchase the creeper skin as an NFT (non-fungible token) and then connect it to your Minecraft server in the near future. Mojang has taken a clear stance against the massively popular game's use of NFTs and blockchain technology. "[To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and enjoyable experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated into our Minecraft client and server applications, nor may be used to create NFTs for any game-related content, such as skins, worlds, items or other mods" the developer stated in a statement. The game will soon be updated with the game’s guidelines accordingly.



Minecraft provides a marketplace on which users can sell their creations to others. Mojang states that some companies have recently begun offering NFTs that can be used to the game. There are NFTs related to Minecraft skin packs and world files that players can buy. According to the studio it was possible for players of Minecraft to earn Minecraft NFTs through actions performed within the game or in other locations. Mojang isn't on board with any of this.



It was stated that each of these applications of NFTs or other blockchain technologies creates digital owner based on scarcity, exclusion, which isn't in the spirit of Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity. "NFTs don't include all members of our community, and create a stalemate of haves and the have-nots."



Mojang rules allow Minecraft server owners to charge access fees, however everyone should be able to use the same features. "NFTs however, may create models of exclusion and scarcity that conflict with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft," the studio said.



Mojang also expressed concern over the speculative nature of NFTs and said that certain were sold at "artificially fraudulently high prices." In light of the fact that Minecraft has millions of players in its youth It's not a great look for the game to support NFTs. "The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term enjoyment and success of our players," Mojang said.



The studio and Microsoft the parent company, have every reason to be cautious about blockchain technology or NFTs. There has been a significant opposition from the gaming community against these technologies. Another reason is that the prices of cryptocurrency have dropped, and the NFT market is drying up. Even the once-leader in the blockchain gaming space, Axie Infinity, was the target of a major hack (with victims losing out as a result) and its daily player numbers have fallen by more than two-thirds over the past few months.



Some other major gamers have already shied away from NFTs and blockchain. In October of last year, Steam banned games that allow cryptocurrency and NFT trading. Sony recently announced the launch of a PlayStation Rewards program that includes digital collectibles. The company stressed that these can't be traded , and that the program does not include NFTs or blockchain.

However, Mojang isn't completely rejecting the blockchain. The company said it will be monitoring the evolution of the technology to "determine if it will allow for safer gaming experiences or other practical and inclusive uses in gaming."
