Why Railroad Workers Is Fast Becoming The Trendiest Thing Of 2023
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to remove the creosote sludge that is buried at its rail yard that is contaminated. Recent tests have revealed that the contamination could be an issue for residents living nearby.

Researchers say it may be related to elevated cancer rates in the region. Two years into a health inspection by the state the researchers found higher than anticipated rates of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia and adult kidney and renal pelvis cancers in areas around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote is a common chemical used in the treatment of wood. It is also a toxic substance and can cause cancers when exposed to it.

It is a thick, oily substance that is black or amber in color and has a smokey odor and a burnt taste. It is a distillation of coal product and has been used for more than 150 years as a wood preservative.

It is employed in the United States to treat railroad tiesand other types of woods like fence posts, utility poles, as well as pilings for marine structures. It can also be used to guard log homes and other structures against insects and rot.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declares that creosote may be an extremely hazardous chemical. When exposed to creosote, even for short periods can cause skin and eye irritation, chemical burns stomach discomfort, burning of the mouth or throat and liver or kidney issues and even permanent damage.

Long-term exposure may cause skin and scrotum carcinomas. This is a serious concern for those who come into direct contact with it during wood treatment or in other manufacturing processes.

According to the EPA the EPA, it is a probable human cancer-causing agent. It has been linked to several cancers which include esophageal, as well lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote, thanks to a former railroad yard close to their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their homes, soil and continues to spread underground.

The cities of Houston and Harris County have joined the effort to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They want the company to test for contamination on a regular basis and take preventative measures to stop it from spreading.

In October of 2017, a group of Fifth Ward neighbors sued Union Pacific. They claim that creosote had contaminated their soil and caused major health problems from the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation for their illnesses and suffering and also damages from railroads for the cost of cleanup and other costs. They claim to have been affected by environmental racism and discrimination as well as other kinds of pollution that have affected their families and themselves.

Dioxin

Dioxins are substances that aren't able to break down in the environment quickly . They can be left in the air, in the soil or sediment for a long time. They can be derived from many sources, including natural catastrophes, industrial accidents, smoke from cigarettes and incineration of hazardous waste.

Although the effects of dioxin on health in low concentrations aren't well-studied but there is evidence that they can trigger serious illnesses like cancer. People exposed to higher levels of dioxin are found to be at a higher risk of organ cancers, heart disease as well as immune system issues and endocrine changes including hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to hormonal issues, weakened immunity as well as diabetes, menstrual problems and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the most common method people are exposed to dioxin is through food or drinking water. They aren't liquid or volatile, which means they are more likely to be in the body through the consumption of meat, dairy products, fish and other seafood.

However, it is important to remember that the amount of exposure that has detrimental effects on your health is contingent upon several factors, such as the amount you eat or drink, how often you drink or eat, and how much air you breathe. It is also important to take into account your gender and age, nutritional status, and family traits to determine if you will be exposed to dioxins.

The type of contaminant crucial. According to the EPA there are some toxins that are more harmful than others for the health of humans. For example, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a negative effect on your health than creosote.

For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys and liver. They can also affect the immune system of a person and interfere with the development of healthy teeth and bones.

For a long time, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have complained about a series of cancer deaths that has been linked to the Union Pacific rail yard, close to their homes. The city's health department said on Friday that it found cancer-causing substances in surface samples of the rail yard. The release stated that the findings were "not encouraging." FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he intends to sue Union Pacific over the matter and that a proposal submitted by Texas environmental regulators will not suffice.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been used in industrial and consumer products for over 60 years. They were banned in 1979, after being found to cause cancer, suppress the immune system, and hinder learning.

Once released into the natural environment, PCBs contaminate air, soil, and water across the world. They are strong binders of organic matter and can be transported easily and accumulated in the environment.

As a result, PCBs are a major concern for the protection of public health and the environment. The EPA considers them to be a possible carcinogen for humans and has proven that they can cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Some studies also link PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly true for children who have been exposed to these chemicals while during pregnancy.

PCBs are most commonly ingested through food. Fish is the main source of exposure, since they contain the most PCBs. However, PCBs can also found in beef, dairy products and other agricultural products.

Another way to get exposed to PCBs is through drinking and showering with water that is affected by PCBs. This could be the result of leaks or spills in electrical equipment and other.

People may also be exposed to PCBs through breathing in air or through skin contact. These chemicals can cause the condition known as chloracne which is small, pale yellow skin lesions which can last from a few weeks to a few years.

The effects of PCBs on human health are still not fully known. Some researchers have suggested they may cause liver and the biliary tract cancers among humans, but more studies are needed to understand the extent to which this impacts us.

The EPA is also examining whether these chemicals may cause birth defects in newborns. A low birth weight has been linked with insulin resistance or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in life. In two studies, children who were born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a toxic metal and can be found in many products, such as pipes, paints and food containers. Railroad Cancer Settlements is absorbed into the body through two main pathways: the respiratory and oral.

It is a powerful oxidizing chemical and can react with other chemicals in your environment. It is able to accumulate in the body, which can cause serious health issues, such as cancer and other ailments.

Houston residents who reside near the Union Pacific Railroad's creosote legacy plant are at a high risk of cancer. The city has requested the federal government to direct the railroad to remove its toxic site.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of contaminating its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic to humans, including creosote. The railroad has been trying to remove the contamination, but a plan presented to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not enough residents claim.

One of the major issues that resulted from the contamination is the plume of groundwater that is located beneath homes in the region. A recent study conducted by health officials has shown that soil samples taken from the rail yard have a higher concentration of creosote than what is required for drinking water.

Another major concern is that the creosote is slowly escaping into the air. It is causing residents to inhale toxic levels of vapors which can cause fatalities for both children and adults.

It is also possible that the particles are causing cancers among the people who breathe them in. A door-to-door health survey is being conducted in the area to discover more about how the vapors impact the lives of the residents.

This is a major problem for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. It's a sad state of affairs and needs to be taken care of immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study discovered that leukemia rates were five times higher for children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhoods than what was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more common in the neighborhoods than elsewhere in Texas.
