British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter
23 September 2014
The British Museum in London - complete with all its exhibits - is to be recreated in the video game Minecraft.
This project is part of the Museum of the Future program, which aims at increasing the attraction of the institution.
Numerous real-world organizations have made maps in Minecraft which includes Ordnance Survey, the Danish government, and Ordnance Survey. They want to inform young people of their work.
This week, Minecraft was sold to Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).
A spokesperson for the museum stressed that the project was in "an early stage of planning" and that the "build" has not yet started.
She also said that the group is planning to recruit people from the public to assist with the "construction".

Initial stages
The initial step will be to digitally design the Great Court and facade of the building.
The institution hopes that this stage will be ready in time for the public debate entitled Changing public dialogs with museums in the digital age. It will take place on October 16th.
Ed Barton, who researches gaming for the analytics firm Ovum Ed Barton, who is the head of Ovum's gaming research department, BBC the British Museum's move to Minecraft will allow it to be "perceived as something fun", and would be a powerful educational tool among a younger audience.
He explained, "It's the digital version of building the British Museum using Lego." "You must build it brick by brick".
He added that the organization should be praised for crowdsourcing it "as this transforms it into something collaborative" and will further draw in younger Minecraft fans.
"What a cool project it would be to be asked to construct the Elgin Marbles in Minecraft," he said.
Reddit is the best place to let people know you are interested in assisting the British Museum project.
