The History of the Hawaiian Shirt
Whether it’s an emerald green pineapple print or a colorful hibiscus floral design, a hawaiian shirt is a key element in everyone’s dream Hawaii vacation. But not many know the origin of this warm-weather staple.

The first aloha shirts entered Hawaiian culture during the 1920s and 1930s, when Hawaiian music and ukuleles reached commercial success and American tourists began flocking to the islands in record numbers. These visitors brought with them a love of tropical fashion and a desire to take home mementos of their idyllic island getaway. By combining the young islanders’ love of vibrant colors and prints with the tourists’ desire for casual summer wear, the aloha shirt was born.
