The Grinch Socks
In Whoville the creatures that appear like humans celebrate Christmas. The only one who doesn't love it is the Grinch (Benedict Cumberbatch). He's a green misanthrope who has a heart that's 2 sizes too big. He lives in the cavern of Mount Crumpit, north of Whoville. The only person he has in his life is his faithful dog, Max.


Max is a funny character who is able to make The Grinch laugh by his actions, and also by making fun of things he doesn't like. Max is able to play the role of a human as well as a pet with positively influenced The Grinch's moral decisions. Max is able to persuade The Grinch to pay attention to Cindy and make better ethical choices. This is due in part to the dog being a part of our culture and more well-known than other animals like cats or snakes, which are more likely to be used for comedy significance in family films. Max can speak in a human voice but also sounds like a dog. He also uses sounds that highlight his animal qualities.



The Grinch's negative image not only influenced by his appearance, as well as the sound design. He has a scraggly hairy appearance and is dirty immediately from the beginning of the movie. Dirty socks are visible on his costume. His facial expressions as well as the manner in which he speaks can contribute to his unhygienic appearance. When he is in the post office scene for instance, he bites Max and this is implied through the sound design, which is accompanied by the loud noises of biting.


Jim Carrey, the actor who plays The Grinch in the movie, spent three hours in the lead-up to the filming began each day, getting into his prosthesis and costume to make an authentic character for the audience.
