Superhero Capes
The genre of superheroes is defined by the use of caps. The cape is an elegant touch to the appearance of any superhero including Superman to Black Panther. Some heroes wear capes as fashion accessories and other (like Batman and Moon Knight) include them in their costumes to make it more practical.



Capes are a great way to demonstrate motion in comics and animation as they can be used to emphasize the flow of characters in the scene. Capes are especially useful for superheroes who hover or fly through the air since they are able to show whether a character is descending. They are also used to show the direction that the character is blowing, which is a crucial feature for those with wind-related abilities.


Naturally, superheroes also wear capes in different ways. Superman's blue and red cape, which serves as an ode to his home planet Krypton is an emblem of strength. Like Batman's dark crimson bat-printed cape, they are an emblem of power. Cloaks are worn by DC villains Cloak and Dagger are a way to conceal the identity of heroes.


The cape has been a part of the superhero's fashion since the beginning. The first costume of Superman was influenced by strongmen from circuses of the 1920s and 1930s. Weightlifters from the 20s and 30s were able to wear outfits with a lot of color and tight clothes to showcase their muscle. They also wore caps that hung over their shoulders to add an impressive accent. The capes were a striking effect to the costumes of superheroes as they stood out from the rest of the crowd. Additionally, they were simple to reproduce with early printing techniques.



The cape has changed with the passage of time and has become an iconic symbol of the superhero fashion. It is a way to distinguish superheroes. Certain capes are included in the designs of superhero costumes such as the curly cape that Thor wears, or the mysterious cape worn by Marvel's Storm.
