If you're an avid Sanrio enthusiast, it's not a surprise that the company offers some serious cute merchandise. The Japanese company sells gifts, accessories and stationery emblazoned in its characters. Sanrio is involved in film production and publishing. It also operates two theme parks in Japan: Sanrio Puroland and Harmonyland.





Sanrio has been changing its characters over time. Some of the first characters featured Hello Kitty, a white cat with a red bow and no mouth. She is still one of the most popular brands in the world. Other characters that are well-known are My Melody, Keroppi, Little Twin Stars, Tuxedosam, Badtz Maru and Tenorikuma. Unico, the baby unicorn created by anime star Osamu Tezuka was at one time a part of the company. However the rights to his character were transferred following Tezuka died in 1989 to his own business.





The company today has more than 220 characters. The characters include Charmmy Kitty, Kuromi, Pompompurin and Chi Chai Monchan (a pink monkey who carries bananas on his head). The list of characters is continually growing, though. Sanrio brings out three new characters a year.





It also provides a variety of other products, such as drinks and food. Recently, it added two new wines to its Hello Kitty Collection. It also offers drinks, teas, and juices.

Sanrio Digital creates and publishes digital media based upon the famous intellectual properties of the company including Hello Kitty and Badtz Maru. Examples of their digital offerings include games, videos and web series, mobile apps, music and more. The company works with other organizations to create joint projects.





Sanrio has worked in collaboration with a number of manga and anime series to develop limited-edition products. Some of the most memorable collaborations are the Attack on Titan x Sanrio line, which has a reversible bucket hat as well as an all-over image featuring members of the Survey Corps with their Sanrio friends. There are pins with characters in pairs.





The company is working on a host of other exciting projects on the horizon. In sanrio merch and beyond the company will open its flagship store in Shanghai. The shopping experience will feature four themed zones in which fans can buy merchandise featuring their favorite characters. The store will also hold live events, including meet-and-greets and art workshops.
