The songwriter and musician Lucy Dacus is one of our current favorite singers. The Richmond, VA native has released three full-length albums under her own name, and two with boygenius, her group with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers.


Her album 2021, Home Video, which is based on an intense interrogation about her transition to adulthood in Richmond and has a very personal feel.


Lucy encouraged the audience to sing along with "Night Shift" after a stirring rendition of Cher's hit song "Believe." Lucy closed her set with a stunning song she pleaded with the audience not to record.


Home Video is the Virginia writer's reflection on her childhood with the same candor and empathy with which she reflects on her own life. The album, which includes singer-songwriter contributions from her boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers will reveal the intimate as a bridge to the world.


Dacus is a mild-mannered singer with her guitar, and her low-key gaze. But a listen to the subtle and devastating Thumbs indicates otherwise. It's a song about why she'd kill someone, but it also points out ways that killing could be unclear and open to different interpretations. In terms of sound, she veers just a bit from the delicate sound of No Burden to a softer version with songs such as "Night Shift" and even experiment with auto-tune on Partner in Crime.
