Lucy Dacus Mug tea and the Throat coat tea at Blackman Auditorium
There's a tricky serenity that sits at the core of Lucy Dacus' music. No matter if she's singing about her faith-based childhood or speaking about the moral complexities of today's world The singer-songwriter's effortless style is never shaky.

The ability of her to weave stories within every song is at the core of her music. Dacus begins each track with a gentle smile and voice that is low enough to whisper. She slowly builds intricate landscapes crescendoing sound and feeling. Dacus creates a layered harmony of emotions with equal dexterity. The result is a deep, pulsing beat that feels like an intense scream.

Dacus brought a huge crowd to Blackman Auditorium Jan. 29. Katherine Miner is a Richmond, Virginia third-year music student who has been an avid Dacus fan since the debut album No Burden as well as the follow-up album of 2018 Historian. Her new album Home Video, released last month, has made an even greater connection. Lucy Dacus Merch was released in the last month of this year and is billed as a sort of coming-of age autobiography. Dacus reflects on her personal experiences as a teenager through her most personal artwork.

The album begins by playing a looping footage of Dacus as a child but the images soon fade into static. Dacus is holding her guitar as well as a mug full of tea before she takes the stage. She sips a cup of the Throat Coat tea before starting to perform. Dacus is gaining momentum following Boygenius her shape-shifting 2018 collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker has brought her into the mainstream, but Home Video marks a distinct change in her process of creating.

Lucy Dacus, a singer-songwriter indie rocker who has received critical acclaim as a young artist, has been eager to share her personal experiences through her music. The new album Home Video> is no instance of this, as she explores the intimate nuances of her adolescence through candid sincerity and poignant emotional comments.

Videos from Dacus’ childhood are projected on the screen that is behind her when she takes to the stage. She arrives with a cup of tea, which she sips during songs. "It's Throat Coat tea," she says, smiling.

The audience is small, however, it is diverse. They are together in their admiration of Dacus' empathetic lyrics. Katherine Miner, a third-year music major, first became aware of her through boygenius, an indie supergroup featuring Dacus along with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, and has been a devoted fan since. Her admiration stems from the narrative that runs throughout her discography.

After gaining critical acclaim for her debut album No Burden, and the 2018 follow-up album Historian Indie rock singer and songwriter Lucy Dacus tapped into her own adolescence to create the intimate Home Video. Released last month, the project finds her exploring her personal growth and development with fresh candor.

While she sings, animated scenes of her childhood appear on a tiny screen behind her. Between songs, she sip from a mug of what she calls "throat coat tea."

Lila Poppel is a junior theater and psychology major who walked into Blackman Auditorium well before the doors opened in order to secure a good seat. She was there to witness it since she felt it was relevant to her own life. She became a passionate fan of Dacus after discovering the singer through Boygenius. Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers' indie rock project. Her admiration can be seen in the way she interacts with fans.
