At Wits, Zylstra excelled at rugby and captained Wits’ First XV staff, incomes Transvaal colours and Wits Full Blue. He served as registrar on the Bridgman Memorial Hospital in Brixton, Johannesburg, which was the biggest hospital designed explicitly for care of girls in the Southern Hemisphere, but was forced to closed in 1965 and later grew to become the Garden City Clinic.
