After lecturing at Rhodes, and a difficult period in Cambridge, Merton married Jenifer Orkin, who taught in the History Department and Economic History division for a quantity of years. Merton moved into banking, changing into chief economist after which a senior govt at Nedbank, before returning to the Wits Economics Department as professor and head in 1989, and then serving as Dean of Commerce until his retirement in 2001. Amongst several papers which he wrote and presented, was one within the South African Medical Journal in May 1963. This paper “The Care of Accident Victims on the Roads” instructed action to be taken to extend the survival price of street accident victims by enhancing amongst other issues, Communication. Gwyn is survived by his spouse Val in Plettenberg Bay; his son, Bruce whose spouse Pippa had simply lost her battle to most cancers on the nineteenth May; Bruce and Pippa’s children within the UK (Dylan, Dane, Danielle, Dominique and Rachel); and his daughter, Jen. Dr Marinus Olie (MBBCh 1950) died suddenly in New Zealand on 8 May 2011, aged 84. Born on thirteen February 1927, Olie furthered his Wits medical research in England, where he certified as a specialist doctor and was ultimately made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
Kris was a gifted researcher, trainer, administrator and medical ambassador. He was a cultured particular person, a rounded Renaissance Man who adopted the Santayana doctrine of being mindful of one’s history so as not to repeat it. He inherited from his dad and mom a nice intelligence, a dogged persistence and adequate ambition to project him into the heady post-imperial and worldwide scientific world.
