If you want to experience a true taste of Greek culture, you can’t leave the country without attending some of its biggest events. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be immersed in a celebration of its history and traditions, and even its future. The capital is full of events, from the largest music and dance festivals to ancient theater performances. Some, like the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, run all summer long, making it easy to fit a visit around your other plans.

The most important holiday in Greece is Easter, celebrated on the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday and observed throughout the week preceding it. This is a time of family gatherings and feasting. In addition, all archaeological sites are free to the public on this day. On the eve of Easter, people traditionally cut into a cake called vasilopita (which contains a coin) and share it amongst relatives or friends. The person who gets the piece containing the coin is considered lucky for the year ahead. Other holidays that take place during this period include Theofania / Epiphany on 6 January, which is the official start of winter and is celebrated with swimming and the throwing of a cross in the sea. It commemorates the baptism of Jesus and is similar to Christmas in that it’s a time of giving.

A more modern event that commemorates a pivotal point in Greece’s history is May Day. This is a national holiday that remembers the students who protested against the military junta that controlled the country from 1967 to 1974. The parade is held at the Athens Polytechnic and features a band, fireworks, and a traditional dance performance in the central square. Another major holiday is Independence Day, which is on 25 March and is celebrated in the capital with a military parade, a concert at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and an illumination of the Acropolis. This is a very festive holiday for Greeks, and it is especially lively in Athens. The city lays on a series of free concerts, exhibitions, open walks, picnics and wine-pairing dinners at its historic venues, including the Acropolis Museum Restaurant. In June, the Athens City Festival offers a smorgasbord of performances from both international and Greek artists at many of the city’s best venues.

Throughout the month of August, on the night of the full moon, Athenians hold musical performances at many historic sites across the country. If you’re planning on being in the country, don’t forget to channel the brilliance of ancient Greece’s greatest astronomer, Hipparchus of Nicaea and head out for some star-gazing. There are many places in the country where you can watch the show, including at key historic sites like the Acropolis and the Roman Agora.
