Lord Huron Mug Review
Despite being named for a lake where lead singer Ben Schneider grew up, the Michigan-based indie folk band Lord Huron are at once both of and out of time. Their brand of rustic, atmospheric Americana has a timeless quality that makes it sound natural alongside the likes of Alt-J on alternative radio and at festivals like Bonnaroo. Yet their music also sounds as if it could have come from the aughts, with its collegiate folk harmonies and folk-rock instrumentation.

Thats perhaps what makes the band so appealing, as its an indie folk act that does psychedelic music without sounding cheesy or contrived. Lord Hurons lyrics are expansive, full of descriptions of natural landscapes and existential conflict. But the bands simple acoustic arrangements make it feel easygoing, and smooth harmonies give the music a mystical vibe even when the songs are about creepy desert towns or end-times premonitions.

The bands early music is a bit more pastoral, but as Lord Huron gained more popularity and toured, they wanted to expand their sonic palette. So they brought in childhood friends drummer Matt Barry and bassist Michael Renaud to create a fuller band. This allowed them to write more sprawling, cinematic songs, including the sweeping folk-rock of 2015s Strange Trails.

It was a great fit, and the band has stuck with this configuration ever since. The result is a group thats at once intimate and grandiose, as they deliver slow-burning ballads and foot-stomping anthems. Theyre at their best when theyre playing for an audience that isnt just swaying along, but actively participating in the experience.

And thats the kind of crowd they had in Cleveland last night, as Lord Huron delivered a set filled with fan favorites from both of their albums plus a few new songs from an upcoming release. It was a great way to kick off their weeklong run of shows in the city.

While the show started off a little bumpy as those of us with Songkick tickets had to wait in a 45 minute line to get our unscannable tickets replaced, once the band took the stage the atmosphere was electric. It was a beautiful venue with great acoustics, and the six-piece band lived up to their billing.

They delivered a mix of old and new, but they saved some of their most emotional songs for the encore, including The Yawning Grave and Ends of the Earth. The night ended with them singing Neil Youngs Harvest Moon, which was a fantastic way to close out the night.

Ive seen the band a couple of times now, both at small venues and larger theaters, and they always bring a special energy to their performances. It was an intimate and magical night, and I cant wait to see them again. Lord Huron Mug is touring again this year, bringing their bittersweet indie folk music to cities across the country. Check out their schedule here to see if theyre coming to a town near you.

Evoking wide-open vistas and the spirit of travel, Michigan-born Ben Schneider's Los Angeles-based indie outfit Lord Huron emerged in the early 2010s on the heels of the indie folk boom. Their lush, Western-inspired second album Strange Trails reached a wider audience in 2014 after its closing track got a high profile placement in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

The band's major label debut Vide Noir followed in 2021 and climbed to number ten on the charts, with critics such as NPR, AllMusic, Wall Street Journal, Brooklyn Vegan, and Uproxx hailing the project's complex characters and expertly woven narratives. A one-of-a-kind album, Long Lost follows in the footsteps of its predecessor and continues to earn praise.

A sexy, self-assured figure onstage, Rooke has forged her own path as an artist and performer. After a brief stint working in the sex boutique of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren on London's King's Road, she landed a job at the storied Knightsbridge department store Harrods where she honed her imperious style.
