Since the band's formation at the start of the decade, Bay Area metal band Deafheaven have earned a reputation for blurring genre boundaries. They've been praised as gods among the metal community and denounced as blasphemous posers by their detractors. Sunbather (2013) was the band's debut album, was a combination of shoegaze and black metal elements and lifted them to a new realm of lyrical abstractions. It dealt with depression, material envy and the struggle for meaningfulness.





However, even though Deafheaven Merch have consistently been a source of controversy for both metalheads and non-metalheads alike they've also been consistent in their vision of the music. Each album is an original interpretation of the band's musical template. From the soaring beauty of the album Ordinary Corrupted human Love in the year 2018 in the post-metal chugging tempo of Roads to Judah, to the death-metal-inspired ferocity that is featured in this year's New Bermuda.





Deafheaven is always a unique band with their distinct sounds. This is one of the reasons they have an enviable following. The group's 10 Years Gone, released in celebration of their tenth anniversary and is a retrospective of their long career. It contains all their previous studio albums, and also tracks from the entire range of music they've produced.






This album has faults, but it's nonetheless worth listening to. The rushed outtake of "Another Life", which feels like an afterthought is just one instance. The majority of tracks except for George Clarke's shrieking voice or Daniel Tracy’s occasional blast beats, are affluent. This is particularly true when you consider they were released at the peak of Covid-19. The most impressive track of the collection, however, is the single-cover of Mogwai's acclaimed late-90s output that concludes the record. The band is able to do the Scottish rock iconic songs justice, with Clarke's screams seamlessly being interspersed with washy clean guitars and riffs that are delay-washed.





It's an incredible sonic tour that will go a long ways towards showing that those who denounced Deafheaven for not being "truly" metal are all wrong. While the band isn't the one to come up with the term "blackgaze," they're among the most accomplished practitioners of the genre and ought to be acknowledged by a variety of fans for their unabashed adoration of melodic, soaring music. In a world where genres merge and blur, Deafheaven stand as a an example of the power and potential of experimentation and creative freedom.
