Deafheaven Blankets"New Bermuda
Since forming the band in Modesto in 2009, Deafheaven have become a constantly creative force whose constant crescendos inspire catharsis on the part of their fans across the spectrum of music. Their ability to create a lyrical landscape, despite stylistic changes and provocations (pink album art, fashionable haircuts, or a font written in pentagrams) keeps them interesting as well as relevant, and gained them a loyal following from all sorts of musical tastes. Their last album, Infinite Granite, may mark their biggest stylistic change yet, moving to a starkly beautiful and dark world of post-rock and metal.





Deafheaven Blankets, who celebrated a decade of their music with the release 10 Years Gone Live in December last year, are now looking ahead and back to see what they can do to improve their music. And as guitarist Kerry McCoy explains, casting away the past was crucial to continue their growth.






New Bermuda could appear to be a radical break for the band. It's possible for some fans to drop interest. If you listen closely, it becomes clear that Modern Escapism is not a slouch. The sprawling cinematic landscapes of the band's debut album How To Let Go were amplified to larger dimensions.





It's not as though they've abandoned their distinctive style completely; in actual they're more focused and confident than ever before. This results in an album that's fuller sophisticated, intricate and more enjoyable. The album propels the group to new heights in their career.





Infinite Granite sees Deafheaven Blankets revisiting some of the compositional strategies that led to Sunbather, their debut album, such an enthralling and memorable record. It's not a game with a side-scrolling landscape, but the Windows XP wallpaper of high-res rolling hills, with boundless and undefined boundaries.





The result is an overflowing landscape of ideas, more detailed and complex than ever before. The tone of the guitar is less spectral and more intense, while the tempos are faster and the dynamics are more powerful. The 10 minute central track "Baby Blue" is a mix of chunky '90s emo rock to twinned, New Wave of British Heavy Metal-inspired guitar tunes. The black metal gnarled guitar riffs, which form the heart of their music have lost a bit of serrated edge, but they are in the same fierce form as ever. They're a great combination with these beautiful landscapes.





Justin Meldal Johnsen, a new producer has been hired to record the album. His production style that is hands-on has had a profound impact on the final product. His attention to detail and a willingness to experiment has allowed the band to expand their sonic palette and push into new territories.





As they explore these new sonic frontiers It's important to remember that their primary goal was always to create music that captures the full spectrum of human emotions, regardless of the genre. Each song, no matter if it's their most intense, fierce moments, or their more serene, reflective moods is an unforgettable experience. Although some may view the subversion as a step in the wrong direction, it's a mighty and uplifting one with the potential to become their best work to date.
