Disney will offer an official Joy Division t-shirt
Photos of famous artists and bands are often reused or sold in a world of memes and social media as well as the world of celebrity culture. This usually happens without the consent of the artist. But, it's not occur all the time. This is why we're hearing about Disney's announcement this week that they'll sell a t-shirt featuring Joy Division's iconic white-on album cover in black.


Unknown Pleasures was released by the band on June 15th the 15th of June, 1978. It quickly became an icon of post-punk and one of the most famous designs for a t-shirt. Peter Saville designed the cover that reversed a photo of radiowaves taken from the pulsar CP1919 to create the iconic pattern of black and white.


It's still difficult to determine the mystery behind the iconic artwork that graced Joy Division's debut album. The band's names were not on the cover, and the enigmatic line drawing that was drawn in black and white has been the subject of many speculations. Are they pulsating waves of dying stars? Does this represent a mathematical analysis? Are they the syn-drums that filled the dark track of Insight or is there something else going on?


Joy Division, like other groups from the Manchester music scene of the 1970s, were influenced by the Sex Pistols and the punk spirit that anyone could achieve. The baritone voice of Ian Curtis showed that they were serious about their music. They moved away from the ambiguous political declarations of punk into the realm of inner turmoil.


The band earned a reputation as a doom and Gloom elite. The tragic death of Curtis in the year 1980 established the band's status in the rock and roll legend. They also gained the reputation of being a little too loud for loud punks.



The debate over the question of whether Joy Division is a new wave, post-punk, or punk group continues however there's no doubt that their music is just as strong as ever. Unknown Pleasures is a great album to listen to when you're running or in the car. Make sure you keep a few black t-shirts in your car.
