Epilepsy Alarms
Many people with epilepsy wear devices that can be used to alert emergency contacts or a helpline in the event of a seizure. These can be watches or other devices that are worn on the wrist and can detect seizures with rhythmic movements, electrical changes in the skin and other physiological features.
There are also monitors that can be placed under your bed or worn as a bracelet. These can be helpful for people who have frequent falls or wandering after a seizure.
Seizure Detection Devices
These devices look for repetitive, shaky movements that are similar to a tonic-clonic seizure. They will then send an alert to your family or emergency contacts.
Other devices may be able to detect the location of your house or when you open doors and windows. These could be useful if you are prone to wandering after seizures or if you have a partner or child who might be tempted to leave the house.
Seizure Forecasting (Figure 3)
Another possibility is to predict a person’s risk of having a seizure using data from clinical notes, wearable devices and mobile apps. These factors can be combined to create a model of the patient’s individual seizure likelihood and displayed as a real-time forecast to the user.
There is a lot of research into these devices and they are being tested in hospitals and clinics across the world. However, they need to be proven to work before they can be considered as a useful tool for people with epilepsy and their families. Emfit Epilepsy Alarm
