Status epilepticus (SE) is a disorder characterized by recurrent seizures that last longer than 5 minutes. Epilepsy Alarms It can be due to various factors such as trauma, drug toxicity, metabolic disorders, and heartbeat.
Status epilepticus is an emergency condition that requires immediate treatment. The aim is to identify the underlying cause of the seizure and to terminate the symptoms. If the seizures continue, the patient is administered intravenous medications.
Depending on the location of the epileptic focus, the intensity of the seizure, and the age of the patient, there may be some risk of damage to the brain. For this reason, it is important to have a standardized protocol for management of status epilepticus.
Tonic-clonic SE is characterized by rapid jerking movements and loss of consciousness. People who suffer from this type of seizure may also lose voluntary muscle control. They may bite their cheek or tongue, or they may become incontinent.
In general, tonic-clonic SE is the most dangerous type of SE. Treatment involves the administration of potent intravenous medications. This helps to decrease the adverse effects of the seizure and reduces the risk of death.
Treatment also includes monitoring the patient's oxygen levels. Blood tests can help to diagnose the cause of the seizure.
Depending on the etiology of the seizure, a lumbar puncture may be performed to rule out infection. Laboratory testing may include a toxic drug screen and a complete blood cell count.
Medications are also given to stabilize the circulation and airway. Computed tomography can be used to identify problems in the brain.
