's Sarah Spellings takes us to Kentucky, where there's a lot going on besides the 149th running of the Derby. The coronation and the race both happen to fall on the same day this year, bringing out the fascinators, feathers and wide-brimmed headpieces in droves. But a day to remember hoodies 's not just a fashion statement: millinery is serious business, and people have been wearing hats for centuries to mark important events. JENNY PFANENSTIEL, owner of Forme Millinery: "There's just so much skill in the work that goes into a hat. It's almost like an art."
One of the first things you see when walking through a house or meeting someone for the first time is their hat. It's an instant connection, and it's a symbol of the culture in which they were raised. Hats are also a reminder of family and friends, and in the case of cancer patients, they're used to remember loved ones lost.
But they're also worn to show that a person is fighting back. "When you go through a difficult period in your life, whether it's the loss of a child or an illness, you've got to remember who you are and what you can do," says Journey of Hope patient and volunteer Margot McLellan. "When you put on a hat, it's a reminder of the strength that we have to make it through this."
The Journey of Hope Survivor Dinner and Hat Party is set for Thursday, April 19, at the historic Marston House in San Diego. It will be an afternoon to celebrate and honor survivors and their families while raising money for research.
During the event, participants will have the opportunity to try on as many different hats as they'd like and share their own stories of survival. A variety of food and drinks will be served.
Tickets to the Survivor Dinner and Hat Party are available online or at the door. The fundraiser is made possible through donations from the community and supporters like you. To donate, click here. They are known for their amalgamation of metalcore and pop-punk. They toured extensively as part of Warped Tour 2009 with For the Fallen Dreams and Kenai, and they have also played with The Devil Wears Prada and Sky Eats Airplane. They have released six studio albums.
