There haven't been many underwear breakthroughs since the advent of boxer briefs in the early '90s, but these undergarments are a welcome addition to the men's closet. They're form-fitting like briefs, but they give your undercarriage room to breath and move--and they're super comfy.
As a result, they're great for everyday wear and for a variety of occasions from casual to formal. So if you're in the market to upgrade your underwear drawer, it's important to know where you fall on the briefs-to-boxers continuum. That way, you'll have a better idea of what style to choose.
Before boxer briefs were introduced, men wore tight-fitting knee-length flannel underwear called "drawers" or tucked into pants that were a little looser. But in 1925, Jacob Golomb of the venerable boxing equipment company Everlast started tweaking the designs of the trunks worn by pugilists to make them more comfortable. Rather than simply changing the fabric and color, Golomb added elastic waistbands that let men adjust the fit for comfort.
In a matter of years, men were ditching their drawers for boxer briefs, which are now the standard. They're a versatile, supportive option that's also good for sleeping and lounging, as well as some physical activity such as running or walking. the used merch to boxer briefs is the fabric--they need to feel smooth, soft, and have some stretch to them. Too much spandex and you'll end up with a pair of tighty whiteys that'll feel like a tourniquet on your legs.
Another big factor is the leg openings and binding--they need to be a decent size so they don't bunch up under your jeans. Tight and constrictive leg openings or thick binding aren't ideal and will be uncomfortable. Also, you want your underwear to contour to the shape of your body, so you don't have any lumps or bumps showing through your jeans.
Fortunately, there are plenty of high-quality options out there. Some boxer briefs, such as those made by Sunspel from fine long staple cotton, feel closer to satin and are incredibly comfortable thanks to their four-way stretch. Other brands use fabrics that are a bit more technical--like the AIRKNITx line by Mack Weldon. The silken tencel lyocell in these boxer briefs is incredibly soft and wicks moisture like Dikembe Mutumbo blocks basketballs. No matter your preferences, there's likely a pair of used Boxers out there that are just right for you. Just be sure to check the tags first to see if they're returnable. If not, make a note on your purchase receipt and donate them to your local thrift shop. They'll be used to create cleaning rags or other household goods, which is a fantastic way to give them a second life and keep textile waste out of landfills. And who knows--they may even become your new favorite pair of underwear.
