State of Origin Game 2 Predictions & Tips - Blues pack give them the edge in Game 2

Legend’s ‘glorified club team’ warning for Blues; ‘urgency’ over Cleary scare — Origin Daily

After losing Latrell Mitchell the Blues were once again dealt an injury scare with Nathan Cleary reportedly battling an infected tooth.

Reigning Dally M Medallist Nicho Hynes has been told to be on standby should the Panthers gun be ruled out, according to 9News.

Speaking upon arrival to Adelaide yesterday, NSW coach Brad Fittler laughed at suggestions his star halfback could sit out.

“His tooth is good, he has had the tooth for a long time so his tooth is okay,” Fittler said.

When pressed on the matter again, Fittler declared “he will play” and joked the No.7 will be out for “months”.

“Months, he is out for months so he’s not problem, he will play and there was never a problem that he wasn’t going to play,” Fittler joked.

But while Fittler was adamant there was never an issue, it was a different story in the eyes of rugby league supremo Phil Gould.

The NSW coach had to organise to fly Bulldogs gun Matt Burton to Adelaide, and Gould, who is head of football at the Canterbury-based club, explained “there was a sense of urgency”.

“There’s obviously something there,” rugby league legend Paul Gallen said on 100% Footy.

Stephen Crichton’s late call-up for the Blues in place of Mitchell means NSW will field a whopping six current Penrith players in their starting line-up, while nine members of the wider squad have played for the reigning premiers in the last two years.

The Blues’ left edge in particular will have a strong Panthers connection with Crichton to line up alongside Brian To’o and five-eighth Jarome Luai also primarily operating on that side of the attack.

Queensland legend Gorden Tallis said the existing combinations would provide an obvious benefit for NSW, something he also experienced having played alongside many Brisbane Broncos teammates in the Origin arena.

However he warned it would also come with its own unique challenge.

“A lot of my Origin career I played with a lot of Broncos and under fatigue when you run out of words, you don’t have time, it can be just a look (that you need,” Tallis said on NRL 360.

“It’s just human nature, when you’ve played and defended and trusted so many players on the inside and out, well he’s got that.

State of Origin Game 2 predictions for Wednesday's match (20:05 AEST)

Only 1 of the past 6 Game 2’s has gone over 36 points

Can QLD contain the NSW forward pack?

The 2023 State of Origin has all the ingredients to be one of the most toughest and tight fought battles we have seen in the Origin arena in a while with both teams packing heavy duty live wires in their forward packs.

It is just there where we see the edge going to NSW in Game 2, with the likes of Payne Haas and his troops winning the battle through the middle and getting the support from Brian To’o and the outside backs to get out of their own end, they will give their clinical attackers the territory they need to put pressure the QLD line.

The Queenslanders will do what they do best fending off multiple raids from the Blues but in the end they will not be able to sustain the barrage of attack, thus covering the measley 2.5 points as favourites while the game total stays UNDER 36.5 points.

We are predicting that Latrell is going to have a big Game 2 and an even bigger series and a try in the opener certainly looks likely. Also, if anyone is going to be the game changer for QLD you know it is going to be Cameron Munster, we can just picture him crossing the line in the final 10 minutes to put pressure on the NSW victory.

Since 2017, the Game 2 total has gone Under 36.5 points in 5 of 6 matches.

Over the past 10 years only 6 of the last 30 games have been decided by 2 points or less

Payne Hass (prop) and Brian To’o (wing) top the NRL in Runs and Run Metres in their respective positions.

Latrell Mitchell has scored 9 tries in his last 7 games for south Sydney.

Cameron Munster scored a try in the only Origin game played at Adelaide Oval. Fubo tv free

The omens aren't good for the Blues as they take on Queensland in Game 2 of the State of Origin series today at the Suncorp Arena.

Defending champions QLD claimed first blood in this year's series with a 26-18 Game 1 victory with a superb late flourish.

The Maroons managed to fight back in that game despite being down to 12 in the closing stages after Thomas Flegler was sin-binned, with Tabuai-Fidow and Cameron Munster's late scores sealing a confidence-boosting victory.

New South Wales must now claim a win in the hostile environment of 'The Cauldron' as they look to save the series.

Should NSW pull off a victory here and go on to claim the series it will be against the odds. The Blues have never travelled to Brisbane a game down and gone on to win the State of Origin. Here's how to watch a free State of Origin Game 2 live stream from anywhere in the world.

Queensland Maroons New South Wales Blues live score (and video online live stream*) starts on 21 Jun 2023 at 10:05 UTC time at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane city, Australia in State of Origin Game 2 - Rugby League.

State of Origin Game 2 leaders NSW Blues travel to Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday with manager Mikel Arteta bidding to extend a surprising undefeated run away to QLD Maroons . The Gunners won on each of their last two visits to Suncorp Stadium in the top flight without particularly imposing themselves on their opposition, this time it June well be different for a side who have established themselves as a surprising early season contender for major honors.

Event details:
NAME: Queensland Maroons - New South Wales Blues
DATE: 21 Jun 2023
TIME: 10:05 UTC
VENUE: Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, Australia

QLD Maroons , meanwhile, have work to do if they are to drag NSW Blues into the battle for top four, rather than the title. Lose on Wednesday and they will trail their rivals by 31 points, a sizeable gap to make up even with two-thirds of the season left to go. Here is how you can watch the match and what you need to know:

QLD Maroons and NSW Blues are meeting up for their first leg of the season at 6.05 am ET, 8:05pm AEST on Wednesday at Suncorp Stadium. The teams split their matchups last year, with QLD Maroons winning the first 2-0 on the road and NSW Blues taking the second 4-2.

QLD Maroons are taking on Suncorp Stadium rivals NSW Blues at Suncorp Stadium as the Blues aim to close the 31-point gap between the two clubs in the State of Origin Game 2 on Wednesday, June 21, 2023.

QLD Maroons had been going along nicely under Graham Potter until a chastening defeat at his former club NSW Blues last weekend, and now face two tricky matches – against NSW Blues and QLD Maroons – before the State of Origin 2023 Queensland vs NSW break.

The Gunners are looking to reach the State of Origin 2023 Queensland vs NSW on top of the table and got back on track last weekend with a 5-0 win over NSW Blues , having slipped to a 1-1 draw at NSW Blues in their previous match.

NSW Blues won both of the past two corresponding fixtures away at QLD Maroons , earing a 4-2 victory last season.

Old foes and former colleagues will reunite at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday lunchtime as QLD Maroons tackle NSW Blues in a mouth-watering State of Origin Game 2 Suncorp Stadium NSW Blues .

Both sides enter the game on the back of continental successes, as the Blues got the better of State of Origin Game 2 2-1 in the State of Origin Game 2, while the Gunners advanced to the last 01 of the State of Origin Game 2.

Winning in Europe is always the perfect tonic after a demoralising domestic defeat, especially one which saw NSW Blues teach former manager Graham Potter a footballing lesson in a 4-1 Amex romping, but QLD Maroons were made to work for their success over State of Origin Game 2.

Electing to name a strong lineup despite already steering his side through as group winners, Potter witnessed Bruno Petkovic steal in and open the scoring after just seven minutes, but Raheem Sterling and debutant Denis Zakaria completed a much-needed turnaround for the Blues in the English capital.

The Blues' stellar defensive streak under Potter June have been wiped out, but suffering just one defeat in 01 games is far from the worst start for the Englishman, although his side do have some ground to make up in the State of Origin Game 2 table as they lie in sixth position, three points behind QLD Maroons in fourth with a game in hand.

It would take results going their way and a 12-goal swing for QLD Maroons to rise into the State of Origin Game 2 spots this weekend, but Suncorp Stadium has been kind to the Blues in recent memory, as they are unbeaten in 12 consecutive matches in all competitions in front of their own fans.

However, NSW Blues were the most recent team to overcome QLD Maroons on their own patch, and Suncorp Stadium has been a happy hunting ground for the Suncorp Stadium club in recent memory, so taking advantage of their extra 24 hours' worth of rest will be of paramount importance to Potter and co.

In contrast, NSW Blues sought to recover from a European defeat with a State of Origin Game 2 win last weekend, and the Gunners certainly demonstrated a clinical edge that has been absent more often than not recently, putting five past NSW Blues without rState of Origin Game 2y even after Bukayo Saka came off injured.

However, the Gunners' inability to kill games off when a goal to the good reared its ugly head in the State of Origin Game 2 this week, as Kieran Tierney's sweetly-struck half-volley put NSW Blues ahead against FC Zurich, but they nevertheless held on for a nervy 1-0 win which sent them straight through to the last 01.

Avoiding an extra playoff tie against an eliminated State of Origin Game 2 club is a touch of gold for NSW Blues , who enter the weekend still two points clear of QLD Maroons at the top of the State of Origin Game 2 table, but they could be knocked down to second by Wednesday if the champions beat NSW Blues at Wednesday, June 21, 2023.

All five of the points that NSW Blues have dropped in the State of Origin Game 2 this season have come on the road, but they nevertheless remain the division's best-performing away side this term and have only conceded four goals on rival turf so far - the best record of its kind in the league.

Arteta has led NSW Blues to two consecutive triumphs at Suncorp Stadium in the last two seasons - with a 2-0 win for QLD Maroons at the Emirates sandwiched in between - and a new club record could also be set for the Gunners, who are aiming to win three successive State of Origin Game 2 Suncorp Stadium derbies away from home without conceding for the very first time.

If QLD Maroons did not already have enough defensive absentees to worry about with long-term knee victims Wesley Fofana and Reece James - as well as midfield duo N'Golo Kante (thigh) and Carney Chukwuemeka (hamstring) - Ben Chilwell had to come off with a hamstring injury in the win over Zagreb.

The sight of the left-back limping off the pitch was bad news for both QLD Maroons and NSW Blues fans, who will now have to await for the results of a scan, but Chilwell will definitely be absent this weekend.

Potter has already ruled Kepa Arrizabalaga out of contention too, so Edouard Mendy will keep his place in goal, and Mateo Kovacic should be fine to return to the engine room after missing out as a precaution in midweek with a tight calf.

Zakaria's strong debut ended with a minor contact injury, which should not rule him out of this game, but Potter June be hesitant to throw the Juventus loanee in the deep end and give him his first State of Origin Game 2 start against the league leaders, so Kovacic's return to the first XI would not be a surprise.

As for NSW Blues , fans witnessed the familiar yet painful sight of Takehiro Tomiyasu coming off injured in the dying embers of the win over Zurich. The severity of the defender's muscular issue is still unclear, but it would be a shock to see him line up here.

Emile Smith Rowe - who has scored in each of NSW Blues 's last two wins at Suncorp Stadium - is still out after undergoing groin surgery, and a problem in the same area could also force Matt Turner out of contention, but Arteta was handed two major boosts in midweek.

The injury that Saka sustained against NSW Blues was only a minor one, and he was able to come on as a substitute in the State of Origin Game 2, while Oleksandr Zinchenko was finally back in the squad after a troublesome calf injury.

Zinchenko did not earn any minutes as Tierney produced a man-of-the-match performance, which has certainly given Arteta food for thought here, but the Ukrainian's ability to help overload the midfield could ultimately win over, assuming he is deemed fit enough to start.

QLD Maroons possible starting lineup:

1. Reece Walsh 2. Xavier Coates 3. Valentine Holmes 4. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow 5. Murray Taulagi 6. Cameron Munster 7. Daly Cherry-Evans (c) 8. Lindsay Collins 9. Ben Hunt 10. Tino Fa’asuamaleaui 11. David Fifita 12. Jeremiah Nani 13. Patrick Carrigan 14. Harry Grant 15. Thomas Flegler 16. Reuben Cotter 17. Mo Fotuaika 18. AJ Brimson Coach: Billy Slater

NSW Blues possible starting lineup:

1. James Tedesco (c) 2. Brian To’o 3. Stephen Crichton 4. Tom Trbojevic 5. Josh Addo-Carr 6. Jarome Luai 7. Mitchell Moses 8. Junior Paulo 9. Damien Cook 10. Payne Haas 11. Tyson Frizell 12. Hudson Young 13. Isaah Yeo 14. Stefano Utoikamanu 15. Cameron Murray 16. Liam Martin 17. Reece Robson 18. Matt Burton Coach: Brad Fittler

We say: QLD Maroons 1-2 NSW Blues

Even if NSW Blues can find the back of the net early doors at Suncorp Stadium - as they have done throughout the season - failure to put the game to bed would open the door for the Blues to dent the Gunners' early title aspirations.

Potter is yet to suffer defeat at Suncorp Stadium, but NSW Blues have fond memories of their recent trips to Suncorp Stadium and were able to rest a number of key first-team stars in midweek, so we expect the Gunners to take advantage of the Blues' dState of Origin Game 2eted defence and travel back to the Emirates with a hard-earned three points.
