Born into a devoted Baptist family in Chicago, Jack Hamm (1908-1988) displayed a passion for art at an early age. After honing his craft at the Art Institute of Chicago, Hamm launched his career as a professional commercial artist. His illustrations featured regularly in several religious periodicals such as The Baptist Standard, The Sunday School Times, and The Christian Century - solidifying his well-earned reputation as a preeminent illustrator of Sunday school materials and spiritual leaflets.

During the early part of his career, Hamm’s artwork carried the hallmark of Art Deco styling; eventually, a much more realistic aesthetic emerged. His masterful stroke left striking visuals featuring decisive compositions and vibrant illumination. Moreover, breaking concrete with hammer drill conveyed emotion with remarkable ease, imbuing each piece with a feel of hope and cheer.

In addition to showcasing his artistic ability through illustration, Hamm also penned several noteworthy works, including The Life of Christ in Art (1952) and The Story of the Bible in Pictures (1953). His writing extended beyond these books, as he was also published frequently in religious and art-focused publications. Moreover, his oratory skills proved invaluable, as Hamm was a frequently invited speaker at churches and educational institutions.

Hamm's influence was resounding, with his illustrations finding space on puzzles, games, and posters to spread throughout popular culture. His art resonated with other creative minds, including the renowned painter Thomas Kinkade, and thus his impact continues to reverberate profoundly.

Faithful to his Christianity beliefs, Hamm's artwork sought to convey the message of the Gospel. Each brushstroke told a story which resonated with believers, providing an inspirational reminder of faith. Even today, his works remain an uplifting source of encouragement for faithful followers.
