A pod is a unit of application containers in Kubernetes. It encapsulates multiple co-located containers that are tightly coupled to form a cohesive unit of service. Pods also provide shared storage and network resources, and a specification for how to run the containerized applications.
Each Pod has its own set of Containers, whose containers are co-located and co-scheduled together. The Containers in a Pod can communicate by standard inter-process communication techniques, such as SystemV semaphores and POSIX shared memory. Containers in different Pods can also use IP networking to connect to one another.
Pods are created and managed by a workload resource, such as a Deployment or Job. Workload resources, including their controllers, manage replication and rollout as well as automatic healing in case of Pod failures. The controller for the resource creates Pods from a Pod template, and each Pod is then scheduled on a Node in your cluster. The scheduler ensures that your Pods are deployed in the desired state. The Pods are managed by the Kubernetes platform to achieve application scaling and availability as needed, such as when a Node fails or you want to increase the number of instances of an application running on your Pod.
Unlike most Kubernetes resources, which can be observed and controlled by the API server, Pods are bound to one kubelet on a Node, so they cannot be modified from the API server. ks kurve You can, however, add a static Pod to a Node to run your own self-hosted control plane components. Static Pods are not visible from the API server, and a kubelet on a Node directly supervises the Pod and restarts it if it fails.
